Inspired by the song "Death Scene" from Chuck Mangione's {u}Children of Sanchez{/u} |
Death Scene Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today To mourn the death of a nation. The cradle of life destroyed, Burned in a blaze of glory. Its children killed by the hand of so-called liberators. And for what? Innocents sacrificed for the greater good? No. No good will come of this. Yea, as we walk through this valley of death, We are the evil they fear The ones who shattered the City of Peace. How on earth can it be pieced together again? The sun is setting on desert sands Somewhere in falling down shack a baby cries The once beautiful land is war torn and dead Bodies shrouded in white are waiting to be laid to rest And enemy bodies are in pine boxes draped in flags In just a matter of days we invaded the city, Bombs fell at night like clockwork. Children lie dead in the streets, Their mothers crying, “Why? What did we do to you?” A torn poster scuffles across the deserted street, It reads, “With our spirit, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, Iraq.” The souls of its people died the day the city fell First Mesopotamia and finally Baghdad, a shadow of its former beauty Oppressed by an evil dictator, the thought we would bring freedom Instead we brought more death, more loss, and military rule. But the sun will shine another day And the children of God will struggle to see it. |
