Here’s to Christmas.
And here’s to Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere.
Endless days of sunshine and swimming pools reflecting a cloudless sky,
The smell of boerewors sizzling on the braai.
The laughter over chilled Hunters and tossed salads.
Here’s to the overcrowded beaches and burnt bottoms,
Children gazing seriously into rock pools filled with jewels,
Coconut oil and SPF 30.
Here’s to fireworks lighting up the sky,
Eyes filled with wonder,
And oranges stuffed into the bottoms of stockings,
While children dream of ribbon and wrapping.
Here’s to Christmas day,
Sitting out on the veranda under fragrant blooms of wisteria,
Eating cold meat and passing bowls of cherry tomatoes in olive oil,
And Christmas programmes being fanned over sweating faces in church.
Here’s to hours of daylight,
And weeks of relaxation,
Peace and new life.
Here’s to Christmas.
And here’s to Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere.
