I stare up at the man,
large chocolate eyes
dancing and glowing
like a fire,
warm and full of life.
Alone I stand with no family
Hoping that today was the day,
silently pleading to be taken,
yet too scared to speak.
My long hair skipping and frisking
to the beat of the wind,
my lips forced downward,
in a frown.
All the hardships pressed downward,
squashing my free spirit and my soul into a box,
waiting for someone with the key,
to unlock it so I could spread my wings,
and soar up into the heavens.
I look at the man again
maybe today is that day.
Could he be here for me?
or is he going to walk by,
another homeless kid on the street.
The man walks on
not even a glance,
I received not even a glance,
I look down.
Despite the hardships,
the pain and suffering,
A tear slips,
down my dirt crusted cheek.
I quickly wipe it away,
I can’t show weakness.
I need to survive.
