I'm so sick of Stupor WAL*MART
"Boycott commie christmas!" Wow, you're thinking, this sounds harsh...Now that I've caught your attention with a modern advertising ploy, read on....

I say "Boycott Commie Christmas!" to cast slurs upon the commercialized consumer madness that has overtaken the spiritual joy of the midwinter festivals. Boycott the giant corporations with their flourescent cathedrals, and send them a richly deserved damning blow in the language they understand best, finance. Resist the Pavlovian summoning to spend, spend, spend. Giant corporations are like drug pushers, and like a drug it is a hollow gratification they offer, sought by a stark eyed mob that mutters and snarls. Superstores foster a cold, indifferent attitude contrary to the joyous spiritual reasons of the winter holidays. I do not rejoice in Walmart. Nor do I hear carollers. Instead, I meet harried strangers stripped of the time and inclination to smile, or thin-lipped, steely eyed generals grimly calculating the next advantageous strategy in their personal campaigns.

This season, let's patronize the small concerns, the family run stores that yet lie tucked in amongst the giants. Return to our nurturing roots, where we feed our loved ones. Actively seek out the unique, charming antique and gift shops who let you know they appreciate your patronage. Remember how to spend a few seconds of your time for a stranger; smile, hold a door. If you can't find something someone would like or need, than tap into your own talents; create homemade cards, make warm foods, craft simple seasonal jewelry or ornaments, knit scarves. Organize carolling with your neighbors and friends. Offer those priceless gifts that are free yet far too few; a warm handclasp, a sincere wish for a bright and cheerful holiday. Draw family and friends to your hearth, and delight in the joyous chaos that ensues.

I visualize storybook days, where our small towns lay glistening and quiet in the awed hush of Christmas day. I hearken for the glad sounds of carollers ringing through midnight streets, I hunt the scent of special baking wafting through the icy air. I feel a child's delight in the crackling flames of the Yule log, and an adult's content in the ruby depths of a glass held before it. I'll meet you there, my friend.

Please visit my poll to register your opinion on the corporate takeover of our holidays. I have a special treat for treehuggers, so email me if you're an emphatic yes!

Do you agree with the social commentary contained in the essay "Boycott Commie Christmas"? Would you follow a movement based on opinions and observations that concur with the sentiment of chastising corporate entities for their often heedless replacement of unique landmarks with a store identical to another within a 20 mile radius? Or do you feel that the homogenizing influence of corporate entities has made life easier?
YES! Bring down the Man, hug a tree, give the Americas back to the Americans, and boycott commie Christmas!
You make some good points; I may discuss them with others.
      I can't live without WAL*MART!
I think the author of this essay should be caught and shot!
      Huh? What now?
