Another for class, this one more light-hearted. Written with full appologies to Mr. Poe. |
It was many and many a year ago In a kingdom by the sea That a man there lived whom you may know Who says he knows a lot about me He claims I had no other thought in my mind Than the seemingly all-important love from he We were both young, which might explain How I was so thoughtlessly naïve To be swept away with words and sweet nothings- And a desperate need to believe We used fancy phrases and eloquence abound To describe a story of “We” And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea I didn’t mind having a reasonable excuse To escape quite completely I understand it wasn’t the most thoughtful thing But understand, neither was he He shut me up in his material convictions In that “kingdom” by the sea The angels in Heaven, hopefully having sense Should be able to see The reason (as very few men then knew, When they dragged women off to the sea) Was that I just couldn’t take being held back any more So I let fate kill quaint Annabel Lee Our love could indeed be called quite a love It was the same of those older than we (But not of those wiser than we) And neither those great teachers of logic Or even of straight equality Can make the man realize I have hear and soul That I’m more than just Annabel Lee He can use descriptions of night and speak of dreams But I’m more than just Annabel Lee He can eye my looks with sight that’s actually quite blind But I’m more than just Annabel Lee He would indeed lie with me at night by my side He may have expected his own Cinderella-like bride But his vision was then lost to the sea Locked away in that damned shallow sea |
