We sat in our circle and vowed
to each make a square for a quilt.
We would each embroider a fruit
and would stitch upon it our names,
birthdate, date of diagnosis
and leave a place for date of death.
The time came to sew all of our
squares together to make a quilt
and once done, the question was this,
"Who would become the 'quilt keeper'?"
We decided that the oldest
member of the group would keep it
until they passed, then the next one
in the list would inherit it.
They would then stitch the date of death
in the proper square on the quilt.
Despite not being the youngest,
the "Survivor's Quilt" is now mine.
So, here I sit, with quilt in hand,
looking down at my stitched apple,
wondering who will stitch the date
in my square… when Lupus fells me.
