The luke-warm sun
is no good for tanning
by this hour, but we embrace
it anyway and soak
it in delightedly. The edge
of the Earth is anything
out of our sight--
it is us and the varying tide.
Teenage hearts pound
like a headache
and though we haven't a clue
how to love,
we are brilliant guessers.
I don't struggle to find
words; the best of me
is fixed in your young skin
and chestnut waves. The tide
comes in; the savory
air blows coolly
across the beach, and at last
New Jersey enthralls me.
