Trials of deciding who and what you want to be
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a veterinarian.  I was certain I wanted to work with animals.  When I was in high school I took a part time job at the local Humane Society. One day I had to hold the head of a sweet old dog while the doctor put her to sleep. I cried that night and knew that with this life changing moment (one of many) becoming a veterinarian was no longer an option.
Soon after, I decided I wanted to be a lawyer instead. I took Latin courses in preparation; maybe it was the words “Habeas Corpus” and “Modus Operandi” which prompted the decision. I had a great time in debate class and even made it to the state championships.  I didn’t do very well compared to other, and in my mind, better educated students. So, I didn’t believe I’d do well as a lawyer in the real world. I still enjoy a good argument and came away with the ability to speak in front of groups of people with little discomfort.
I really became fond of words and decided to major in English in college. I wanted to become the greatest teacher ever.  Forming young minds as well as my teachers did for me (Ms. Davis 10th grade English, and another Ms. Davis for all three years of journalism). Circumstances prevented me from obtaining the Bachelor’s degree required to teach and I ended up with an Associates and a job in collections with a local packaging company.  After a lot of hard work and perseverance I managed to work my way up to Accounting Manager and a career as an accountant.  Not quite the dream I was looking for, but it pays the bills.
I commute 60 miles a day for my current job.  During these two hours, I listen to talk radio. Every day I listen to people talk about current events, movies, and television.  It really doesn’t seem that hard to do and they have so much fun! I would love to break into this genre and let people know my opinions, argue with other people, and get paid to talk a lot. It would be very exciting and a great venue for my general thoughts, and a great place to get feedback. And for an added bonus, you technically only work four hours a day. Although some show prep is recommended, for that you just need to hop on the Internet or read a newspaper.  Bring up a subject and then you, your co-host(s) and the callers interact.  I certainly think I could do as well as some of the people currently on the air.
I really don’t want to be an accountant for the rest of my life.  Like most people on WDC I’d like to make money with my writing. In the mean time, working in radio would be a great way to pass time, not just a job.
