GENTLEMEN - START YOUR ENGINES! I do not profess to know all about cars, But one day of the year I sit back With enough food and drink to last me, I think, And watch race cars fly 'round on a track. In a small sleepy town, down in New South Wales In October each year we will be, At Mount Panorama - scene of this drama It's the Bathurst 1000 we'll see. The anthem is sung, and the crowd they go wild! The Marshall declares pole positions. A hush fills the air, all the drivers aware Of the call "Gentlemen - start your engines!" Fasten your seatbelts, they're rolling around Warming engines and feeling their stride. They take up their place, it's the start of the race, And we're in for a real bumpy ride. Seven long hours, they whiz round the circuit With pit stops - the seconds they're counting. Change tyres in haste, no time to waste. The winner is "King of the Mountain". The starter's flag falls, and one car engine stalls, A race over before it's begun? 'Round Hell's Corner first, Mountain Straight and a burst Of a three hundred kph run. Up through the Cutting to the great mountain top "PANORAMA" - the sign on the face. The Skyline above, Forrest Elbow - they shove Onto Conrod Straight - speed to the Chase. Around Murray's corner, finish line in sight, Here the crowd will wave; loudly they roar. They will cross the line for the very first time, One lap down, there's just one sixty more. At the end of the day, the checkered flag falls And the winner parades for the mob. The pit crew rejoice, and they shout with one voice Three big cheers - we've all done a great job! There are winners and losers here at Bathurst Broken hearts and a few shed a tear. But I'm sure of this, not one will miss Being there on the Mountain next year. In Memory of PETER G.BROCK AM.
