Two teenage super heroes go trick-or-treating on Halloween night. |
The bell rung, indicating the end of the seventh period at the JFK Middle School, when a steady stream of students came pouring out of the large, metal doors of the imposing main building of the campus. Two students came walking out, cheerfully discussing their plans for this afternoon. After all, it was the last day of October. Halloween. A tall, African American student came from the high school, which was down the street, and he approached the boy with light brown hair and started to talk to him. "Hey guys.... Jamie, I'm going over to William's house to work on a C-sharp program... Are you and Kristoff going home right away?" "Yeah, I think so..." Jamie replied. "Good... You got the key to the house, right?" Wesley asked him. Jamie nodded in reply. "We'll be home... although we might go out later...." Jamie added. Kristoff joined the group with the clear signs of having just been running. "Oh, hi Jamie, hi Wes. How's it going?" he asked. He was looking around frantically, but what he was avoiding managed to find him. "Hey is that Ferros!?" someone from the throng of students shouted. "Yeah it is!" someone else shouted. "Hey can I have your autograph!" "Me and Kristoff might go trick-or-treating tonight... it's Halloween!" Jamie said excitedly. Wesley rolled his eyes and sighed. "Ooh boy... Well... You still have your clown suit that you wore last year..." Jamie was the one to roll his eyes this time. "I don't think it'll fit me anymore... I may have outgrown it..." "Uh oh... Don't tell me you and Kristoff are going trick-or-treating as Ferros and Superboy! Jamie! You do this every year!" Wesley whispered to him in an angry tone of voice. "Awww come on Wes..." Jamie said in a sad tone of voice... "My Superboy suit is the only costume that fits me, besides.... Look at Kristoff! Everybody knows him! He's gonna wear his costume! Why can't I just go trick or treating as Superboy?" Wesley stared at Jamie for a moment, then he turned towards Kristoff. "Hey, Kristoff..." Kristoff turned to Wes as he was forced to put his autograph on someone's notebook. "There, now sorry, uh, everyone, I got personal matters-" he tried to explain. Immediately people started shouting "What are they!?" someone shouted. "You're soo adorable!" someone, a girl, shouted. Kristoff rolled his eyes and looked around for some excuse. "Hey is that Superman?" he shouted, pointing in one direction. The momentary distraction allowed him to press a button on his watch and activate his cloaking device. When everyone turned back to where he'd been, they saw he was gone. With an almost collective groan they all started to disperse. Kristoff made his way over to his friends and became visible again. "Huh? What is it Wes?" "Hey, Kristoff, are you and Jamie going Trick-or-treating tonight?" Wes asked him. Jamie leaned over and whispered in Kristoff's ear. "That was a very cool trick, dude!" "Uhh, yeah we are. Going in our superhero costumes," Kristoff answered. "Why?" "Don't you think people are gonna get really suspicious when they find out that it is the REAL ferros and the REAL Superboy knocking at their door on Halloween night?" Wesley asked him. Kristoff folded his arms. "Everyone knows I'm Ferros. Did you not just see that annoying crowd of fans?" he asked, an annoyed tone trickling into his voice. "And I choose what I go out for Halloween as, not you. Clear?" He turned to Jamie. "And as long as Jamie wears his shades or something, he won't be easily recognized." "Alright..." Wesley said, letting out a deep sigh... "Go ahead and dress up as Superboy... as long as you stay with Ferros! You guys may as well go as a team... Well, I have to go to William's house now... Have fun, you guys..." Jamie looked up at his big bro. "Don't worry, Wes... We'll save you some chocolates!" "Thanks, little bro..." Wes said, before he turned around and started walking away. "Don't mind Wesley, he just worries a lot about me..." Jamie said to Kristoff.... "Well, we'd better get going towards my house, before another crowd of your fans catches up to you!" "Yeah, we better," Kristoff said, grinning cheekily. "Of course I can get on my costume like this." He snapped his fingers and his leather jacket, t-shirt, jeans and sneakers shifted into a full body suit of black spandex with green block patterns on his chest with green on his shoulders and from his elbows and knees down. Also he had metal bands around his wrists and on his boots. "See? No problem." "Oh wow!" Jamie chuckled. "I wish I could change that fast!" Jamie and Ferros crossed the street and walked a few blocks until they reached Jamie's house. "I got a little bit of homework.... but I can take care of it in a minute or two..." Jamie said as he unlocked the door. "We still got a few hours before we can go trick-or-treating. We can play some video games, or we can watch TV if you like...." he suggested to the young super hero, as they walked into the living room. "Would you like something to drink?" "Milk please," Kristoff said. " And I think TV. I can help you with your homework at the same time." Jamie poured a full glass of milk and handed it to Ferros. He then turned on the TV, before he walked into his bedroom and came back out with a notebook and his math book. He tossed them on the carpet, before he got on the carpet himself and opened the notebook to the last page where he hadn't written anything yet. Then, he started to write out the math problems from the book, which lay on the floor in front of him. "I don't get it... Why did they have to give us homework on Halloween night? Oh well... A little super speed... And I'll be done in no time..." Jamie's super speed kicked in gear and he started filling up several pages of his notebook with math problems and their solutions. After about a minute, he was done! "There.... I think I got it all..." he said, as he looked it over and compared his answers to the book. "How come you didn't get any homework?" "Finished it all," Kristoff said simply. "Super-speed plus being brilliant! Got my homework done like that." He snapped his fingers for emphasis. "Oooh did you do your homework at school?" Jamie asked him. "Sure did," he replied. "Because I don't clown around," he said, with joking sternness. "Hey where's your dad?" "Dad's at work... "Jamie replied. "Unless he's flying around on some emergency somewhere... "Jamie turned and stared at Ferros with a grin."I know what you mean... You don't clown around at school... like me! Everybody thinks I'm the class clown at school..." "Probably because you are," Kristoff commented. He finished his drink while watching TV and spoke again. "So, those muscles come from being on Earth or have you always had it?" "I've always been kinda muscular... But I've really gotten big during the last two years... I guess I had some sort of growth spurt when I turned thirteen... But, even though I have the same powers as my dad, my strongest power is my strength... With Wesley, it's his super speed... He's always been much faster than me! But, ever since I came to Earth and I got my powers, I've been unusually strong..." Jamie explained. "Our powers are all different, to a certain degree" "Oh cool. I think the Goblin formula bulked me up a little. But I'm only ten, so I can't expect much muscle yet." He changed the channel to the news and listened to it for any crime or problems. There were none. "Okie dokie. Well maybe we should carve our pumpkins eh? I got this very special one." He pressed a button on his watch and what looked like a normal pumpkin appeared. "Oh dude I LOVE your magic tricks!" Jamie exclaimed. "What else can you do? Can you change things? Levitate things? Make things grow?" "That wasn't magic. That was a pinpoint teleport. Little beacon in my watch so the object teleports to me. And there's two ways we can carve," he said. A glob of liquid metal appeared in his hand which solidified into a very sharp looking knife. "That's one. The other is a laser cutter in my watch. And you should probably get your pumpkin too." Jamie got up and walked out to the patio. A few moments later he came back with his pumpkin. Ha sat down on the floor with his pumpkin before him, as he quietly observed what Ferros was doing. "Wanna use the knife or the laser? I suggest the knife because you may not know how to operate my watch and you're invincible so you have no risk of hurting yourself," Kristoff suggested. "Oh but I do have some magic items too. You'll see those later." "Sure..." Jamie said, as he grabbed the knife and started carving the eyes, the nose, and the mouth on the side of the pumpkin before him, occasionally pausing to watch how Ferros operated the laser using his watch. Jamie just loved his gadgets and magic tricks. Kristoff pointed the watch at the pumpkin and pressed a button on his watch. A red beam of light shot out and he moved it slowly around. When he turned it off, there was an eye carved into the pumpkin. Another two laser beams later and he was staring at a fully carved jack-o-lantern. "And there we have it. And now for the special bit." He teleported in a small light bulb attached to a stand. It would fit perfectly inside the pumpkin. However he placed it against the back of it so the light shone straight out through the eyes and mouth. "There's a reason I haven't gutted it. Ask me what you normally ask when the door opens on Halloween." "Trick or treat!" Jamie said out loud. Kristoff's jack-o-lantern closed its mouth and spat its innards right at Jamie's face. Kristoff and, oddly, the jack-o-lantern laughed. Four vines grew out of its base, grabbed the goo from Jamie's face, and dropped it back in itself. Then it went back to looking like a normal pumpkin. "Ewwwwww" Jamie laughed "That was hilarious!" "It's an organism I grew. Discovered some alien plant cells on a meteor, and with a little genetic splicing I got this little critter. It's a plant that only takes a little genetic modification to get it to move openings in its shell to certain terms. The vines and the innards spitting is adapted from the alien plant's ability to spit acid and use vines to strangle the prey or enemy," Kristoff explained. "Don't worry though, it's completely harmless now." "I love it!" Jamie grinned. "I guess... All that's left for us now... is for us to go out and get some loot... Well, I need to change into my costume first..." Jamie stood up and walked into his bedroom so he could change into his Superboy costume. A few seconds later, he came back out into the living room, where Ferros was sitting, wearing his familiar blue suit with red trunks, boots, and his long, red cape draped over his shoulders. "Yeah, you go do that. I'm gonna set up some more decorations." Kristoff went outside to see the sun starting to set. According to the clock it was about five o'clock now. He teleported in some ghost decorations and placed the jack-o-lanterns on the doorstep. The ghosts floated near the door, without anything holding them up. And finally he set up two scarecrows guarding the path up to the house. He grinned when he saw Jamie's parents walking towards the house. They passed the scarecrows which instantly came alive and reached out for them. They didn't actually grab them, but sure gave Lois a fright. Next the ghosts swooped over the two adult's heads before returning to their roosts. When the front door opened, Clark and Lois walked in. "Hello there, guys!" Clark said, as he greeted the boys. "Hi dad!" Jamie replied. Kristoff grinned. "Like the Halloween decorations?" he asked. "I still feel like there's something missing though." "Hi Ferros!" Clark said, with Lois behind him. "Did you make the decorations? They are tremendous!" "He also helped me carve the pumpkins, dad!" Superboy said to his parents. "We're getting ready to go trick-or-treating!" "That's what's missing!" Kristoff exclaimed. He went out to the front lawn and some teleports later there were a number of gravestones placed across the lawn. Kristoff nodded with satisfaction. "Perfect, gotta have some undead." "Wow!" Jamie exclaimed. "That really puts everything in the Halloween mood for sure! I guess the only thing missing now is... the candy!" Then he turned towards Ferros. "Can we go trick-or-treating now?" Kristoff nodded. "Yep, we can now." Lois had overheard the two boys and she handed them each two plastic orange-colored plastic buckets which were shaped like pumpkins. "You can carry these to collect your candy in, unless you want to just carry your candy in paper bags... I picked these up in the grocery store!" "These are fine, mom!" Jamie said. "Thanks!" Kristoff nodded. "Yes, thank you Mrs. Kent." He turned to Jamie. "Come on! I have more tricks up my sleeve for trick-or-treating," he said with a grin. Ferros and Superboy walked out the door and headed for the first house, which was across the street. "An elderly couple lives here, should we try there, first?" Jamie asked Kristoff. Kristoff shrugged. "Sure, why not. I'll have to keep my tricks small though." Ferros and Superboy walked up to the front door of the small house and pressed the doorbell. As soon as the elderly woman opened the door, the two boys cheered "Trick or treat!" in choir. The old lady looked at the two boys, and then she turned around and shouted at her husband. "Hey, Al. Come and look at these two boys! These two are dressed as super heroes!" Then she turned back to face the boys. "Wow... you two look so real!" An elderly gentleman came from another room with a big bowl filled with candy. As soon as he reached the front door, he dropped several chocolates in each pumpkin. "Hey... You look like Ferros.... and you're a little Superman!" he said to the boys. "I am Ferros," Kristoff said with a grin. "The real Ferros. Even he goes trick-or treating." "Oooh my goodness!" the man said. "Well in that case, I'll give each of you a couple more!" He grabbed a handful of small chocolate bars and dropped them in Ferros' bucket, and then he did the same for Superboy. "You two super heroes deserve some extra candy for all the good work you do!" the lady added. "Now, I bet you must be the real Superboy?" she said to Jamie. "Yes, ma'am.... That's me!" he replied shyly. "Well, you two enjoy your candy!" the man said to them. "Thank you!" Jamie said, as he slowly turned around and started to walk towards the street. Kristoff stayed for a second and produced a blob of metal from his hand that shaped into a spoon. "Here," he said, handing it to them, "It won't ever rust or get stained. And it's stronger than normal stainless steel." "Thank you, Ferros!" the lady said. "Good night!" then the couple closed the door. Jamie was admiring all the candy in his bucket. "Oh my gosh! We have visited just ONE house... and already half my bucket is already full! These people were very generous!" Kristoff grinned. "Maybe that's the upside to being famous," he said. "Okay, now where?" "Ferros... Is it too early for me to invite you to come over for Halloween next year?" Superboy asked him, as they started to walk to the next house. "I have never gotten so much candy in my life!" "Sure, why not." Kristoff replied. Superboy and Ferros laughed as they knocked on a few more houses. But they didn't have to go far. After a few houses, they had so much candy, their buckets were completely filled. The neighbors were more than happy to give candy to the super heroes on Halloween night, and it ended up being the best Halloween ever for both of them.
