The Way Things Are

like the way things are with you
      the way things have become.

we talk now
      like every word is the most important thing we've heard all day
      like we really care- which we do
      like we can say anything and the other will immediately understand.

we listen now
      more intensely, because we know that we both hide feelings away
      we listen to pick up on the slight tinge of emotion under the surface.

we look now
      at each other, more deeply than before
      searching for things beneath the surface
      caring about what the other's face is saying
      we look at each other's eyes now
            the eyes that say everything at once
            that say "i love you" because it's true
            that let each other know how truly important one is to the other.

we're careful now
      giving advice that we know will help
      saying things that we know the other person will remember
      careful to not mess up the perfect balance we have created.

we're loving now
      in the things that we say and the way that we smile.

we're open now
      reading each other like a book
      learning each other's faults and strong points, fears and joys.

we're easy now
      relaxing when it's us
      falling into an easy pattern of talk and laughter, seriousness and fun.

we're clicking now
      becoming friends that will last.

we're quiet now
      because when we're with each other, nothing needs to be said.

i love you now
      and it scares me
      and thrills me
      and makes me excited for what tomorrow will bring.
