Candy Canes
A Shakespearean Sonnet

The candy canes are draped upon the tree,
The candles lit, the fragrance fills the air
My infant son is resting on my knee,
I run my shaking hands through his black hair.

I rock him back and forth in Momma’s chair,
As Daddy drifts away to the t. v.
The ball game drones it’s hypnotizing fare,
I wish he’d turn, I wish he’d talk to me.

Perhaps It’s best he’s found a way to numb
The pain of losing Momma in the fall,
I know he really wants to have us here,
He wishes Mom could be here too, that’s all.

The candy canes blur, as I wipe my eyes,
In grief I’m trying so hard to disguise.
