Justin and Brittney after Matthew leaves them. |
When the Sand Runs Out Introduction ‘Here lies Matthew Jacob Donham Loving Son Devoted Brother Trusting Friend Jan. 12, 1992 – Jan. 12, 2010’ “Justin?” Justin Phillips took his eyes off his best friends’ tomb stone and looked behind him to see his best friend’s little sister, Brittney Donham. “It’s time to go.” Justin took a little time to look at Brittney. She was wearing a black dress, here eyes puffy and red from crying, her brown hair frizzy from not fixing it that morning. “Alright,” Justin said. “I’ll be there in about five minutes. I just need to say something.” Brittney gave him a little smile, fake of course, and walked off. Justin got down on his knees after he was sure Brittney was out of sight. “Well, Matty,” he started. “I have to go. But I just have to say something. I know this is going to sound a little harsh, but, you were stupid, Matt. I don’t understand why you did it. All I know is, well, we’re going to miss you. And don’t worry about Brittney. I’ll be sure she’s taken care of. I love you, man.” Justin lifted his hand to his cheek, and felt something wet. He had started to cry. He wasn’t even aware until he felt the hot moisture with his hand. He didn’t even remember when the last time he cried was. Justin heard Mrs. Donham’s horn honk around the corner, so he got up and walked to the car. |
