She Was New

The first time I met Kelly
the pain was indelibly etched on her face
as plain as the headlines in todays' newspaper
it caused me to shudder inside

I wasn't sure if it was physical
but it certainly was emotional
and even more spiritual
it hurt so deeply

As time went on I would see her
in the same sad state, with no relief
angst written in her pretty brown eyes
suffering on her face

When I hugged her
I could feel the anguish
it permeated my skin
deeply into my soul

She was physically ill
emotionally scarred
spiritually bankrupt
it worried my heart

She hung in there
refusing to give up
there must be an answer
could she last long enough

I saw her tonight across the room
the metamorphosis complete
I wrapped her in my arms
I felt the deep change

I whispered in her ear
you got it?
yes, she replied
I held her more closely

I looked into her brown eyes
the first smiles in an eon
smiled back at me
she was new
