Prologue

My friend has been through a ton lately, man how my heart just ache for him. Oh! I'm getting ahead of myself. My name is Joey Sanford, I'm a friend of Orell. Orell and I have been friends since grade school, and man have we had our fun. Going into this summer, I thought things would be the same... him and I working at Americana Amusements, just a few miles out of Wichita, Kansas. We are Ride Operators.

Thats when I noticed something wasn't right. We always tried to start work in the same month, but Orell didn't come in the first day. Days became weeks, so I called him up one day while I was off.

"Hello?" Orell spoke

"Hey man, its Joey, whats up?" I spoke in my traditional buddy tone.

"Uhh, everything is....ok." He said, in a weak tone.

I knew something wasn't right.

"Orell, dude... whats wrong?" I asked, worried of course.

Silence...

"Hey Joey, do you think you can come over? I mean... if you can." He asked, I could hear in his voice something wasn't right.

"Sure man, I'll be right over." I said, reassuringly.

I drove to his house, which is not to far from mine. Once parked, I walked up to the door and knocked. I didn't hear anything at first, then I heard what appeared to be heavy footsteps to the door on the other side. I stepped back as the door opened.

There I saw Orell covered in blankets and a towel covering his lower body, the towel dragged on the floor, so I couldn't see his feet.

I sorta laughed, "Whats with the winter parka? Its July man."

I could tell Orell didn't share my joke well.

"Come, quickly! And close the door behind you." He said in a soft, yet quick tone.

Orell locked the deadbolt to the front door. Then turned to me.

"I need to talk to you, but not down here, lets go up to my room."

"Ok," I said, wondering what was going on.

We walked through the house and up the stairs to Orell's room. Walking in, I was surprised. His room was actually spotless! I had never seen his room as clean as it was. He closed the door behind me and pointed to the chair near the desk. He sat down on the bench near his drumset, right across from me.

"Something has happened to me, my parents already know, but I need someone else to be with me, through thick and thin. I feel so alienated right now its scaring the daylights out of me."

I looked at Orell's eyes, thats when I knew he wasn't joking and he was indeed serious.

"Ok man, tell me... I'll still be your friend no matter what. You know that."

"Are you sure?" He asked, shaking abit.

"Ya, of course." I said, to comfort him.

"Ok. It might work better to show you, instead of just telling."

"Right then," I said, with a smile.

Orell slowly removed his sheet off of his head, and revealed to me his secret.

My eyes grew wide with astonishment.

"How did it happen?" I asked, calmly...

"Its a long story. Very... very...very long story." He said.

"Well, you can tell me..." I asked...

"Ok, let me start from the beginning." He stated, scratching his head.

Thats where I come in, Orell told me I can share his story with those who understand his situation. Orell is a unique individual, with a great gift. I'm his friend, and this is his story.
