Dedicated to my dearest friend, my husband Rod, on our 41st wedding anniversary 30/09/2008
Then I was only seventeen, and yet,
Already on you my heart I had set.
Young, with not much money in your pocket,
That first year you gave me a silver locket.

To get you by ‘Scouting,’ that was my angle,
For my birthday you gave me a bangle.
Teenagers, our love-story had begun,
For deep down inside I knew you were the one.

Another present was a wristwatch one year,
To me, by then, you’d become very dear,
Then in sixty-six, an engagement ring,
We were so in love, my heart wanted to sing.

Five years of courting, kissing, holding hands,
In sixty-seven we exchanged wedding bands.
At our marriage in church our vows were made,
And we both hoped that our love would never fade.

Last year, our ‘Ruby,’ you gave a ruby ring,
A joy to find our love’s still on the wing,
From the day I said ‘yes,’ a blushing bride,
I’m thankful you’ve never been far from my side.

So many years, now married for forty-one,
There have been ups and downs, rain and sun,
There have been many rings, silver and gold,
Which still shine, like our love that’s not grown cold.

There have been necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings,
Circles of love; for you my heart still sings,
Through all the years we’ve had love and laughter,
Perpetual love: happy ever-after.

Our children, grandchildren, added to the fun,
And I was proved right, you were, are, the one,
The one I want for the rest of my life,
I’m so glad that you chose me to be your wife.
