A GATE TO HELL

A deep sleep interrupted by a strange dream,
I was walking down a path in an eerie scene.
Trembling, for I knew not where the path led,
apparently, it seemed that I was quite dead.

I felt no pain in leaving life, which was a shock,
I remembered only the loud ticking of the clock.
As the sound died out, I felt my soul rise high
and then I was walking past stars in the sky.

At the end of the path there stood a pearly gate
with a line of people standing who had to wait
to enter in Heaven and receive their own wings,
white robes and slippers and many other things.

Not far from that pearly gate was another one
beckoning me onward and luring me to come.
The music inside the pearly gate was very soft
but the music from the other gate bore me aloft.

Which one to enter, which one was the best?
I only felt like I really needed time to have rest.
I passed by the pearly gate and wandered in
past a gate to hell, where fun would soon begin.

The heat was unbearable, I couldn't believe
that I chose the wrong gate, and I'd grieve
over my decision to live it up way down below.
so I begged the devil to reconsider, let me go!

I awoke with a start and the sound of laughter
as the memory of the devil came ringing after.
I threw off the covers and knelt to say a prayer
asking God's forgiveness and His loving care!

Morning sunlight filtered into my old room
and dispersed all the memories of gloom.
I soon vowed to change my ways and then
I'd never choose the wrong gate, ever again!

A gate to hell is open wide,
beckoning all to come inside.
Don't be fooled by the devil's glee,
look what could've become of me!
