Never be consumed

Pouring rain runs down my face
mixing with my tears
making me feel worthless
useless
just a wet dark figure
sulking in the night

the dark night sky
helps to conceal my tears
as I cry

The ground comes
to greet me
as I fall to my knees
sinking into the mud

I look up at the sky
for a moment
hoping for something to
save me from this
misery this despair

against all odds
I do find something
a single star shining
brightly in the dark

Bringing me out from
my sorrow

I realize from that single star
that the darkness does
not have to win

So I stand up from the
wet ground
wipe the mud from my clothes
and start the long walk home
guided by the single star

the gun in my hand
dropping to the mud
to be consumed by the darkness
as I follow the ever welcoming
light
