Music and words
The only two things that have the power to touch the human soul.
These things are embedded in us from the time we are born.
No child must be taught to sing.
No infant has to learn to use their voice.
These are simple instincts rooted in the deepest parts of our souls.
There is nothing else in the world that is so deeply a part of us.
This is why they have the power to touch us in ways nothing else can.
What else can move us to laughter,
Or inspire us to reach for the heavens?
What else sends chills down our spines
And tears down our cheeks?
What else can goad us to great deeds,
Or terrible rage.
What other simple power can mobilize an army?
End a bloody feud?
There is nothing else in the world like these two things.
Music and words.
Yet there is a line where the two meet.
Poetry.
Music put down on paper.
Tangible,
Beautiful,
Powerful.
It has the power to change lives
And souls.
And yet it all comes down to the same two things.
Music.
Words.
The elements of humanity.
