OVERPASS Sitting on an overpass in the middle of the night On some lonely country road that crosses the interstate Watching the traffic as it heads out of sight Too dark to see the origin of there license plates Mostly semi trucks heading down the road To hit the docks in the morning to drop there loads Every now and then a car or two will drive pass by At three a.m. I hope there not D.U.I. Don't know where there going or where there coming from Just which way they were headed when there journey had begun Maybe they got no real place to go So they just keep on driving to where they don't know Not much happening here in my town Feel like I could die before I get any older Looking at that highway thinking bout walking down Throw up my thumb and stand on the shoulder Try and hitch a ride with some tractor trailer I can ride shotgun and be a highway sailor Drop me off at the end of his run As he turns his rig around back up goes my thumb Don't know where there going or where there coming from Just which way they were headed when there journey had begun Maybe they got no real place to go So they just keep cruising to where they don't know Gonna keep on hitching rides till I seen the continental forty eight Then I'll hitch my way across Canada Making my way towards that forty ninth state Only two more days away lays Alaska If I can't find cars or trucks I'll hitch a ride instead With some team of huskies pulling a bobsled Riding across that tundra breathing in that freash air Sitting on that overpass who'd thought I'd ever make it there Don't know where going or where there coming from Just which way they were headed when there journey had begun Maybe they got no real place to go So they just keep on driving to where they don't know |
