In a thick-glassed, well-lit office break room
By a medium-sized water cooler,
I drank cold, refreshing water from a paper cup,
Standing a few feet from a co-worker
Gobbling on an exotic salad
While reading an outdated magazine.
Looking out, I noticed a rather gigantic fly
Perched atop a length of metallic pipe
Outside the window.
It flew up off the sturdy pipe,
Then back down,
And stood there motionless for some time.
Then it repeated the flying upward
And landing back and lay there
Motionless for a while,
Appearing to be quite fascinated
By the lengthy, suspended metal piping.
I pondered about how truthfully
Nature conducts its affairs,
Scrutinizing and sometimes obliterating
Manmade structures and devices
With its sheer drive and intensity.
A creature was focused somewhat randomly
On a well-built construct of human affairs,
And nature’s impulsive and sometimes meddling
Hand was grasping it tightly,
Like a compulsive, yet whimsical afterthought…
