A poem about rejection and growing up |
Love on a Platter When I was a lad in the fifth grade, A girl sat next to me. Her mouth was a tangle of braces And her face was as cute as can be. I gave her my love on a platter... A trifle she wanted no part. With a shake of her head, She left it for dead And taught me a lesson in heart. But High School offered redemption. A girl sat next to me. Her eyes had the sparkle of sunshine And her smile was soft as can be. I gave her my love on a platter. She handed it back with start! With a look of sheer dread, “Back off,” she said, And taught me a lesson in heart In college a new day was dawning. A girl sat next to me. Her counteance was as an angel, A heavenly body to see. I gave her my love on a platter She dropped it back on the cart With a look of disdain Said, “Don’t ask again,” And taught me a lesson in heart. One day I walked in the office, And this girl I happened to see, Somebody too nice to hope for, To ever take interest in me, Still, I put my heart on the platter, And ordered some hope al-la-cart, "Thought you’d never ask," She took me to task, And taught me a lesson in heart. |
