I plucked the sun from the sky
And asked about the when’s and why’s of everything
In response it rightly fled
From my never ending tirade of questioning
From its back it sprouted
In the way only the sun can
Two gossamer wings
Made of the answers to everything
Shout as I may
Run as I might
I could never hope to outrun the sun in flight
And soon it left me quite behind
Moved by my gentle sobbing
And perhaps the need to escape frantic scorching
The earth whispered to me
With a voice like a landslide, like falling
“Lure it away with a playful game,
Down to the edge of the sea,
Once there, take care,
We’ll drown it in its glee.”
Caring only for my own dilemma
I shouted playfully
And sure enough the sun flew down
And flitted just beyond me
To which the sea opened its mouth
And swallowed the sun forthwith
And only then did I realize the error of my chase
But it was far too late to make amends for my ever meddling ways.
