A poem about a woman remembering the troubles in her past.
Safe

I am safe, hidden away from danger

I am safe, but it’s still so hard to believe

If ghosts aren’t real,

Then why am I so haunted?

I close my eyes, drift to sleep, then,

I am  fifteen again,

Beautiful, full of life.

But

This dream is different.

Once I see the man’s uniform, I realize this is no dream,

this is a nightmare.

Blood glistens on the soldier’s chest,

he chases me on and on, through the dark,

weaving around the destruction and death

I wake up,

struggle for breath,

The war is long over, but I will never forget.

“I am safe,” I tell myself, over and over.

“I am safe now.”
