Two young women stuggle to make it on the streets of new york
I remember the first time Yokasta and I stole something. We were ten, Yokasta saw a pair of earings at woolworth's. We didnt have money and the store didnt take food stamps. We decided the only way to get them was by stealing them. We knew if we asked our mothers for the money they would just say that they didnt have it. I went in first and pretended to look around then Yokasta came in after me. Most of the stores employees were teens from around the neighberhood so the customer service wasant exactly great, nobody came up to you and asked if you needed any help.I walked down the isles of toys just in case anyone was watching, then I made my way to jewlery. Yokasta was right behind me. I saw the earings, there were two pairs. I stared at them for a while. I could hear the little angels on my shoulders arguing back and forth about the crime I was about to commit. But before I made a decision Yokasta grabbed both earrings and shoved them into her bookbag. "c'mon Taina lets go."
We ran out of the store and with our new pair of earings, we ran all the way home. We went to my house since my mom was never home and always working or drinking. Today I was lucky she was just working...she might even come home for dinner tonight. Yokasta took the earings out. they were big doorknocker earings that said sweet on them. They were shaped like hearts in bamboo and gold colored. "You think anybody saw us?" I asked more curious than worried. "Nah they woulda stopped us at the door, stop being such a pussy."
Yokasta tried on her earings they looked huge on her small ears, they looked even bigger on mine. We looked at each other with our huge earings and started cracking up. We decided we didnt like the earings and besides we couldn't wear them at school anyway they were too big. I took the earings and threw them in the trash. "You wanna try and get something else? Like a Polly Pocket or something?" Yokasta looked at me stunned that I suggested we go back. But she nodded her head with a big grin on her face. It felt good getting away with it and I knew we could do it again and we did. No one suspected the two nine year old girls walking down the toy aisle we thieves..huh little thieves.

"C'mon Taina let's go!" Yokasta was shouting out the car window. That bitch was always forgetting to call me Maria. If it wasant for me we'd be doing time upstate for sure. She was too sloppy with the job always with the big mouth. I grabbed the rest of the loot and headed for the fire escape, lucky for me this guy lived on the secong floor so getting down woulnt be so tough. I took one last look at the guy lying on the floor. Yokasta really knocked him out cold with that bat. He was lying face down in a smalll pool of blood that seemed to be coming form his nose. I went back and pushed him on his side with a kick, he groaned a little and a small whistling sound was coming fron his nostrils. I'll rob you till next tuesday but I dont do murder. Yokasta gotta stop hitting these dudes so hard.
I went out the window and down the fire escape with my black duffle bag, It was extra heavy today. City that never sleeps my ass, It was three in the morning and there wasn't a soul on the block. Even the crackheads were somewhere else tonight. I jumped into the car, "what the fuck Yoki? why you shoutin' my name like that? I told you already it's Maria! You WANT us to caught! You mad stupid yo". Yokasta looked over at me with her mouth all twisted and with attitude "Whatever bitch you were taking too long and besides that guy was gonna wake up any second". I rolled my eyes ad tightened the grip on my duffle bag. I could feel the two bricks in the bag, I could see the money already. In my mind I already spent that cash. "You know Yoki you almost killed that guy, i had to roll him over. He was chocking on his blood and shit, You gotta take it easy with that swing". in progress
