The start of a short story about a tornado. |
Tina watched the news with her young family in despair as reports of a tornado were coming through. ‘It is expected that a tornado is inevitable and that it is due to hit the Cornish coast in the next couple of hours, people are being advised to stay calm and seek solace in their basement or a nearby underground shelter.’ ‘A tornado, here?’ Tina said with despair secretly hoping that the news were taking the meaning of April fools one step to far. ‘It’s got to be a joke.’ ‘I doubt it love, there was controversy the other day when a group of meteorologists predicted something like this happening.’ ‘So it’s not a joke?’ ‘No, it’s not. I’ll see if my parents are in, we can use their basement’ Jim said picking up his phone to ring his mum and dad to see if they were at home. ‘Hi this is Mr and Mrs Smith we are currently away on holiday till the 4th, if it’s you Jim we did tell you the other month. Please leave a message after the beep…beep. 'So. what did they say?' Tina asked walking back into the livingroom with everyone's coats. 'They're not in, they went on holiday. I totally forgot,' 'What are we going to do now?' she stuttered picking up her two young twin daughters and kissing their heads. 'Well the closest underground shelter is my mum and dad's, they have a basement.' 'Yeah but they're not in.' 'So we break in.' Jim added going outside into the already treacherous wind. 'Where you going?' Tina shouted. 'To get some equipment. I'll be back in a minute, get the girls ready.' By now the wind was already picking up pace at faster speeds than normal making trees fall and small objects fly past. As Jim grabbed his hammer the roof of the rickety shed blew off nearly making him lose grip of the hammer. Jim ran straight back into the house and grabbed his car keys and his family and sped of three miles down the road to his parents house. The further they went the more unforgiving the wind got forcing the car to sway from side to side. |
