Lacy's staying with her insomniac Aunt Jen.Can she handle it when a boy comes along? |
I rang the doorbell. Through the glass door, I could see Aunt Jenn's West Highland Terrier, Danni at the door, barking her head off. I sighed and shifted my weight. If this woman didn't hurry up, I would be buying myself a plane ticket and heading home. I was spending my summer with Aunt Jenn in the tiny town of Little Star, Maine. Aunt Jenn suffered from insomnia, and the state classified her as mentally ill, but my mom and family never really cared. "Lacy!" Aunt Jenn shouted when she finally came to the door. I smiled and gave her a quick hug. "Come in, come in, let me take your bags." I gave her my bags and followed her inside the house. Her house was beautifully decorated-one of the perks of being an insomniac, I guess. "Here's your room." I walked in to my room. It was just plain white with two windows facing the street and a twin bed. I guess she had never really gotten around to doing my room. "I'll let you unpack." After I had unpacked, I went down to the den where Aunt Jen was watching Judge Judy. My mom loved Judge Judy. I guess she just had that effect on everyone. I sat down on the couch just as Judy was chewing out some pissed-off woman who's boyfriend had refused to have anything to do with their baby. Aunt Jen was smiling. I gave her an odd look. "I just love it when Judy tears these people a new one. I especially love it when you can tell who's going to get the settlement." She explained. "Lacy, what are your plans for the summer?" She asked after Judge Judy went off. "I don't know." "Well, seeing as I'm an insomniac, I work down at the museum in the next town over, Colby. I work the night shift- from nine to five in the morning. I sleep the majority of the day, and leave to go to work at eight-thirty." I nodded. "I was thinking you'd maybe want to get a job or something, seeing as you're heading off to college in a year, and save up some money." "Where would I even work?" I asked. There weren't that many places in Little Star to work besides the deli and the library. "They've got a position opened at the museum during the day. You'd go to work at seven and come home at four." She shrugged as I sank into the couch. "Just a suggestion so you could have some fun this summer, make some new friends...maybe even get a summer love." We laughed. "Okay, maybe not the last one, but still." "Is the museum open today?" She nodded. "Is it okay if I take your car and head over there to apply?" "Actually, Lace, I got you a car. It's a used Corolla, it's around back." She threw me a set of keys. "Have fun." "Thank you." I said and headed out. Little Star was so tiny, it only had one stoplight. |
