CONTINUED: 11. HARPER Well I don’t think it was all that bad. SAIGE No, I suppose it wasn’t. (laughs) The two stop walking at a makeshift archery range. A weathered target is in the distance, a bow sits at rest on an altar like structure near them. HARPER After all, you wouldn’t have been a junior achery champion four years strong. SAIGE Not that my parents gave a crap. I mean what can I even do with that? Shoot apples off people’s heads? Harper shrugs. A beat as Saige contemplates something. SAIGE You think I could use the archery thing as...a superhero myself? Harper shrugs. HARPER Ah, you never know. You could. SAIGE You don’t think that’s crazy? A dumb idea? HARPER No. It’s something I tried mysef. Saige’s jaw drops. SAIGE Really? You? HARPER Yeah. I thought I’d use my bow and arrow and do some cleaning up. Things just didn’t work out. It’s the reason I walk with this cane now. (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 12. SAIGE So it is a possibly stupid move? Uh...no offense. HARPER Not sure. I look at it like pro athletes. I mean you can have a long career doing it or you can have a fluke event that takes you out before you even start. (Shrugs) It just wasn’t for me. Come on, I’ll have Ellie heat up some cobbler. Harper walks on as Saige casts a last look at the bow. EXT. BALCONY - NIGHT Thompson stands on his balcony looking up at the stars. NIVERA joins him. NIVERA What’s the deal Stellar. You invite the gang over here and then you spend the whole night out here. What’s going on? THOMPSON Just got a lot on my mind is all. I visited with my former partner. Hadn’t seen him since I found the gem and got wrapped up in the Hyperion Force and being Stellar Protector. NIVERA Sounds like it didn’t go very well. THOMPSON We’ve been friends since college. Always there for each other. I’m his first son’s godfather. Something happened recently. His wife was gravely injured in a fight between the Vazilok and some rookie cape. They don’t think she will ever recover. NIVERA I’m sorry. (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 13. THOMPSON He’s mad at that and mad at me for not being around. I guess his best friend didn’t have his back. NIVERA You can’t blame yourself. You couldn’t have changed the outcome of what happened. And what we do, we prevent similar occurences. Try to take comfort in that. Nivera heads back inside, leaving Thompson to his thoughts. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT Saige lays back in his bed staring at the ceiling, deep in his own thoughts. SAIGE (V.O.) Could that be the key or am I just being stupid? If I was a superhero, would I have my parents love and respect. No I can’t be some wannabe in his underwear and a towel for a cape. I need to be a heavy hitter. I need to be on the Hyperion Force. Saige sits up in his bed. He thinks for a minute then gets up and heads into his closet. Saige yanks on the chain for the light bulb and starts rifling through the nearest box, marked ’Journalism stuff.’ Various clipping and awards and other material fall out of the box and to the floor. Saige stops, having found what he is looking for. He pulls a photo out. In the photo is Saige and several other reporters at a conference. Among them, Grace Emerson. SAIGE (V.O.) I knew it. I knew she looked familiar. This is from the writer’s conference from last year. Saige flips the photo over. SAIGE (V.O.) Grace Emerson. From the Post. 14. INT. PARAGON POST NEWSROOM - DAY Grace sits at her desk typing away when her found rings. GRACE This is Grace...really? For me? O-K....be right there. INT. PARAGON POST FRONT - DAY Grace finds Saige waiting for her. GRACE Hey, I’m Grace- SAIGE Emerson. I know. We went to the same Paragon Journalists Conference last year. I’m Saige Winters. I work for the Times. GRACE Ah right. I’ve seen your byline a few times. What can I do for you? SAIGE Well this isn’t journalism related and I think we should discuss it outside. Grace gives Saige a funny look. He heads out the front door. She waits a beat then follows. EXT. PARAGON POST - DAY Saige waits for Grace to join him. She is a bit tense, eyeing him the as she exits. GRACE What can I do for you Mr. Winters. SAIGE The Hyperion Force. GRACE I’m sorry? SAIGE The Hyperion Force. You know them. You’re friends with them. Grace laughs off Saige’s accusation. (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 15. GRACE Listen Saige, I think you have me mistaken with someone else. SAIGE I think not. I saw you myself. Near the Bloon Moon. Helping a woman. You and Millenium Guardian and some other guy. Grace’s laughing dies down as Saige looks at her seriously. GRACE I just uh, happened to be over there at the time. Caught in the crossfire. SAIGE Right. That’s why you teleported away with them right? Grace steps closer to Saige. GRACE What do you want Saige? SAIGE I want in. GRACE You don’t just want in. They have to want you in. SAIGE So help me out. GRACE You are trying to step into something way beyond you Saige. Stay safe and stay out it. You’ll be better off for it. If you will excuse me, I have work to get to. Grace doesn’t wait for Saige to reply, turning on her heels and heading back inside. EXT. PARAGON POST - NIGHT Saige sits down low in his car, eyes on Grace as she exits the building. She gets in car and drives off. Saige waits a moment and then pulls out after her. EXT. PARAGON POLICE DEPARTMENT - NIGHT (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 16. Thompson joins Grace outside the department. The two exchange pleantries. GRACE He’s a reporter for the Times. He apparently was on hand when we rescued that woman in King’s Row the other night. When I told MG that he was exposed. THOMPSON Well that’s neither here nor there now. You said he is trying to blackmail us? GRACE I am not sure. It doesn’t seem like he wants to expose or anything, he just wants to join the team. THOMPSON Why? GRACE I wish I knew. His name is Saige Winters. THOMPSON I’ll check him out. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT Saige is asleep in his bed. He is joined silently by Thompson. Thompson regards Saige in the bed and then proceeds to look over some papers on a nearby desk. Thompson jumps back suddenly as three arrows strike the wall where he was standing a moment before. Thompson glances at the bed and sees Saige up and armed with a bow, arrow at the ready. SAIGE (V.O.) I guess it was a good thing I started working with Harper on my cape identity. We fashioned a high tech bow and some pretty slick arrows, I just didn’t know they would come in handy this soon. SAIGE Who the hell are you? (CONTINUED) CONTINUED: 17. THOMPSON I could ask you the same. Well besides being a reporter for the Times and son of a Nobel Prize winner and a college professor. SAIGE What do you want? I saw Grace talking to you. Are you connected to the Hyperion Force? THOMPSON What do you want with us? SAIGE I want in the group. I want to be a cape and I want to start as a part of your group. Thompson launches an energy blast at Saige. He dives off the bed toward the door. Saige recovers and heads down stairs and out the front door. EXT. TOWN HOUSE - NIGHT Saige is stopped in his tracks outside. Standing before him is Millennium Guardian, Nivera and a new face, MERCURIAL TALON. MG Hi there. Saige sighs. Saige dives to avoid another burst of energy, this time from Nivera, launching a couple arrows at MG as he does. MG is knocked on his back, the arrows sticking into his suit, but causing no harm. Saige takes aim at Talon who dashes up to him, standing nose to nose before Saige can blink. MERCURIAL TALON (RAPID-FIRE SPEECH) Yeah, you might want to move a little bit faster than that if you want any shot at all of hitting me. SAIGE Dully noted. Saige takes a few swings at Talon as she dances around him at super-human speed. |
