A young girl falls for the new boy in her school, who is hiding a deep family secret. |
Starting a new school year was both terrifying and somewhat thrilling. I was now a junior in my small South Carolina town, where it seemed as if everyone knew everyone. I loved it here, the smell of the Atlantic as well as the view from my new room was both overwhelming and breathe taking. Everything in my life seemed to be perfect, last year.I was dating Evan ,the quarter back of the high school football team as well as one of the most hottest guys in school and a now he's a senior. Our eight month relationship ended badly, when he dumped me on prom night,in front of everyone. The nest day I found out that he was cheating on me with Sadie Perkins. Sadie was very popular, tall, thin and beautiful. She and I were best friends last year at the beginning of the school year.It seemed like centuries ago instead of last March. I never understood why Evan cheated on me. I thought we had something really good going for us,I was wrong.I couldn't wait for the last few weeks of school to end last year. When summer came I left my small town for Maine,to visit my dad. I needed to get away, desperately. Some thought I was just running away, like my father did.But honestly I couldn't face seeming them together if I ran into them. Now tomorrow is the start of a new year.A better year,so I hoped. I live in a decent house with my mother. My parents divorced when I was eleven. My father now lives in Maine.I rarely ever see him,but he calls a lot. My house was white with a small porch on the front and one in the back. Two bay windows over looked the front yard where a small tree stood. I stood out on my balcony looking out to the ocean wondering how tomorrow will go. My first day at a new school. My room was painted a pale purple color with white curtains. An iron bed sat on the right side of the room with a night stand next to it. My closet was on the left of the room near the glass balcony door. My closet was twice as big as the one in Castle Hill, which I was thrilled about. An old desk sat next to my bedroom door with a new laptop on it. My dad figured I needed a new laptop so we could keep in touch. A part of me missed him terribly, I use to cry myself to sleep when the fighting started. I always felt that it was my fault. But when my father decided to take "trips" without me or my mom, I knew something was up and everything changed after that. I hated him for leaving us. To see her fall apart the way she did when she found out he was having an affair with her best friend, well it was devastating. I never want to go through that. Now that they are divorced I am hoping my mom will get back out there and find someone she deserves. Someone who makes her feel complete. Now my mother seems less depressed and my father, well he has a new girlfriend every couple weeks. The one promise my father did make me that for my seventeenth birthday, which is in two months, that he would buy me a car. I was ecstatic when he told me, but my mother told me not to get my hopes up.I hated riding to school with my best friend Alexi's mother. She makes us listen to polka. It's so embarrassing. Alexis and I have been best friends since kindergarten,we had our little fights every now and then but she's always has been there for me.She's the best.I had everything ready for tomorrow, or so I hoped. "Emily" my mom said as she knocked on my bedroom door. "Yes, mom?" I answered her as I came back through my glass door which lead to my own personal balcony. "Em, I wanted to see if you have everything ready for tomorrow and make sure your okay? I can't believe my little girl is a junior." she said as she walked into my room. She was beautiful, with short light brown hair, pale blue eyes, and ivory skin. I got most of my looks from her. We are about the same height, both around five-five and slender. The only thing I really got from my dad Henry was my long dark almost black hair. My eyes are also a darker blue then hers but other then that we look a lot a like. "I'm fine, mom." I lied. "Yeah,I'm pretty ready.Alexi's mom will be here at seven." I said "Emily, I know things right now are tough. But you will get through this.Maybe this year we both will meet a couple of great guys."she said as I rolled my eyes.. "You never know" she said as she hugged me. "I should get some sleep." I told her. I really just wanted to be alone with my thoughts and just cry. I still had some feelings for Evan. I loved him,or so I thought. He broke my heart, he was my first real boyfriend."Okay, sweetie. Good night. I love you." she said as she was walking out the door. "Night, mom" I replied. I changed into my favorite old pajamas and set my alarm to five forth-five in the morning, my usual wake up time for school. I laid in bed for what seemed like hours crying before I fell asleep. The next day I forced myself out of bed to take a much need hot shower. I dressed in my new school outfit a pair of jean shorts and a decent t-shirt. I grabbed my back pack and walked downstairs, where I noticed a delicious smell coming from the kitchen. I walked through the living room which was painted an off white almost cream color with boxes in the middle of the room. The dinning room/kitchen where right next to it. "What's smells so good?" I asked my mom. "Surprise!" my mom said hold a tray of cinnamon rolls. She was dressed in a business suit with her short hair up in a bun. "I wanted to make you some breakfast" she said as she placed some on a plate for me. "Thanks, mom." I said. She never cooked before,my father did all the cooking. I honestly wasn't sure she knew how, then I noticed the box in the garbage. "This is great" I told her as I bite into one. "Well, eat up. I have a job interview today. Wish me luck." she said as she grabbed her small briefcase from the counter and walked out the door. My mom recently lost her job at a small nursing home back in June. Now she's trying to find something, anything. The kitchen/ dinning room was painted tan. Their was plenty of counter space and cupboards. An island separated the joining rooms. Two french doors lead out to the small backyard. After I ate my breakfast I poured me a glass of orange juice and walked out the two french doors. The fresh, crisp air felt great. 'I hope today goes well' I thought to myself. I was just staring out at the scenery when I noticed something in the corner of my eye. Their he stood.A boy I know I've never seen before.'I wonder when we got new neighbors.'I thought to myself. In the sand looking out to the ocean. He had his back to me. He looked prefect, almost to prefect. "Thomas, it's time to go" a girl about my age said as she came out of the house next to ours. She too was beautiful. Her long blond hair was pulled back into a pony tail. The boy, Thomas turn around to look at the beautiful girl who was calling for him.As soon as he turned around and I felt my heart beat accelerate. He was the most handsome man I've ever seen.Almost like a movie star I couldn't keep from looking at them and then he noticed me staring at him. They both must have because she turned her head towards me and gave me a very dirty look the boy on the other hand just stared. Embarrassed, I immediately turned my head and walked back inside. When I got inside I heard Susan,Alexi's mom's horn.'Time to go"I said to myself. I grabbed my book bag and headed out the door. Locking it behind me I noticed a really nice red sports car in the neighbor's yard where they two beautiful people lived. I walked to Susan's rusty old Chevy grand am,which was parked right in front of my house. "Hey"Alexis said."Hey"I said back to her.She was a pretty girl with long straight brown hair and hazel eyes. She looked more like her father then her flighty, hippie mom.Susan was a psychic, or at least she thought she was one.I noticed her long hair was pulled back into a messy pony tail and her wide blue eyes were hidden under glasses. "Let's go, before we are late again." I heard a voice say as I got into the car,I turned my head to see who was talking and found my two new neighbors and another boy with them, walking out of there house and into a very nice red corvette. I could see Thomas, boy who was out by the ocean earlier a lot better. All three of them had bleach blond hair, almost a silver color, dark blue eyes, and were tan. The other boy was more muscular and taller then Thomas but just as handsome,, maybe even more. They were all dressed in designer outfits. They seemed to belong in Beverly Hills rather then here. I couldn't stop watching them until we drove past them. "I talked to Taylor last night and she said she'll meet us at the steps" Alexis said as she turned around in her seat to talk to me.Taylor was our other friend. The three of us did pretty much everything together. Taylor moved here two years ago from Texas."That's good. I hope we have some classes together."I said."I know. Taylor said she has Spanish forth period. What about you?"Alexis asked me."I have it right after lunch,so fifth period."I told her. "ah,great I have it first period." she said rolling her eyes and turning back into her seat. We arrived at our small brick three story school. The home of the fighting Yellow Jackets. Alexis and I got out of the car and made our way to the main doors at the top of the steps.Where Taylor should be waiting for us. "He's here" Alexis whispered. "Great"I said. I knew exactly who she meant,Evan. Taylor was standing at the top right of the stairs like she said she would. Her long black hair seemed longer since the last time I seen her. She even seemed a little darker then her usual olive skin tone. She was the athletic one, she was on the girl's soccer team. "Hey, guys" Taylor said."Hey"Alexis and I both said to her. "I missed you. Did you have fun with your dad?"she asked me."It was alright"I said. "So guys, are schedules. We need to see what classes we have, if any together." Alexis said. "I have English first period"I told them. "Great me,too"Alexis said. "Taylor, what about you?"I asked her.She seemed to be staring at something or someone. Naturally Alexis and I turned our heads to see what she was looking at. Their again they were.My new neighbors.Everyone was staring at them as they walked up to the building. They walked gracefully up the stairs and right past us, none of us could keep our eyes off them. "Wow"Taylor said as soon as they were in the building. "I know, they live next door to me"I said proudly. "I wonder who they are"Alexis said. "Taylor, what do you have for first period?"Alexis asked as we walked to our first class."Spanish, with Ms.Gomez." she said and made a face. "I have Spanish fifth period, then."I told her. "I have gym fifth period." Alexis sighed."How do you have gym?" "I failed last year. So now I have to make it up."she said.Alexis has always been boy crazy, so when we got a new gym teacher,Mr.Drew, last year she was to busy staring at him to do anything else. "Poor baby.See you guys later."Taylor said as she walked into her class room. I took another deep breathe and made my into the class room which was surprisingly empty.A woman with short curly brown hair and glasses stood with her back to the class while writing on the black broad. "Good Morning" She said to Alexis and myself while pushing her glasses back on her face. "Hi"Alexis said. "Go ahead and find your seats"she said. I sat all the way in back near the window, Alexis took the seat next to mine. We talked quietly to each other until we heard his voice."Hello" he said in a deep but soft voice. "Oh, hello"Mrs. White said as she looked up from her desk to see Thomas standing there. "I'm Thomas Holdermen"he said as Alexis and I just looked at each other."I'm new here" "Oh, okay. Go ahead and find a seat."she told him. He did a half smile and went to find a seat. There were only a few more people that joined the room when he came in. He walked towards me, I felt my heart start to accelerate. He smiled at me and sat down in the seat in front of me. "O.M.G" Alexis mouthed to me. "I know"I mouthed back to her.I could barely concentrate when Mrs.White started teaching the class. I couldn't help but to notice the cologne that Thomas was wearing, was quite intoxicating. I never smelled anything like it. I let my mind wonder until the bell rang, that's when Thomas hurried out of the room. I walked and talked with Alexis to our next class. Which was history with Mr.Smith. Alexis and I sat next to each other again this time Taylor was in the same class with us,which we were thrilled about. "Hey guys"she said as she sat in front of Alexis, who was on the left of me. "Hey" I said to her. "Guess who's in our English class?"Alexis asked her. "Who?"Taylor asked her "Thomas, the new hot boy" as soon as Alexis said his name he walked through the door into our history class, and again he sat in front of me. "Well look who's here" I heard Alexis say. I looked up to see Sadie sit next to her two best friends Lola and Stephanie. They were like Sadie's personal slaves. If she said jump they asked how high. I used to be like that, that's why we aren't friends anymore. I looked down at my desk I didn't want to see her, or her robot friends. "I'm hopeless"I sighed, thinking no one heard me. Thomas turned around in his chair,I froze thinking 'what if he heard me?'."Hello,I'm Thomas.I figured I should introduce myself, since we have some classes together and are neighbors."he said to me with a crocked little smile, I couldn't help but to stare into his dark blue eyes, there in his eyes I forgot my name, how to breathe and everything around me."Hi..I'm....I"I tried to speak but nothing came out. "This is Emily,I'm Taylor and she's Alexis"Taylor said saving me from my embarrassment. "Thank you" I mouthed to her, she smiled at me. "It's nice to meet you all."he said without taking his eyes off of me and turned back around. Mr.Smith introduce himself and told us what we will be learning this year. Again, I could barely concentrate with Thomas sitting in front of me. I felt like an idiot, how could I forget my name? After history was math, my least favorite subject. Taylor was in my class with me, which I was happy about. Thomas on the other hand wasn't. Which made Math seem to take forever. Mr. Perry gave us a math problem and homework on the first day. 'Great' I thought to myself. After Math was lunch which I couldn't wait for.I walked over to our usual table in the lunch room with my tray of food.I sat down across from Taylor ad next to Alexis. I noticed Thomas was sitting with his family two tables down from us,alone. As if they had some strange disease. "Hi,guys" I said "Hey, we were talking about Saturday. Are you in?" Alexis asked me. Saturday was our annual sleep overs. We've done this since I can remember, always the same thing, we would talk about boys, our problems, pig out on pizza, watch movies, and sometimes Susan would give us free readings.Which usually never came true,at least for me."Yeah, can't wait."I told them. "Why is Thomas Holdermen staring at us?" Alexis asked. "I think he's crushing on you,Em."Taylor said. "Your delusional"I told her. "He's been staring at you for a long time, now" Alexis said. "It's almost creepy"Taylor said, I rolled my eyes at them. "I wonder who the other two are." I said. "Well, I did think that they were all related but not anymore."Alexis said as she pointed to them. The other boy kissed the girl on her lips."I hope they aren't brother and sister"Taylor said, we laughed. The rest of the day went by with a blur. One minute I was leaving the lunchroom the next moment I was riding the bus home.Which I hated. Lex had an after school activity,so I was force to take the bus.I sat next to a freshman, who had wild red hair and bad skin."I'm Steve"he said trying to be friendly."Hi, I'm Emily"I said, then looked out the window. By the time I got home I noticed that Thomas and his family made it home also. Before me, I'm sure. I unlocked my house and threw my book bag on the couch."Mom?" I said hoping she might be home. "Mom?" I yelled upstairs. "Mom?" I yelled once more. "I must be home alone, then" I said to myself. I decided to go out to the small back porch and try to get Thomas off my mind, which I knew was impossible. As I was opening the sliding glass door I heard the phone ring. "Hello?" I said. "Emily, I'm on my way home and I wanted to see if you're hungry? I was think.. Chinese?" my mom said. "Yeah, mom that sounds great. How did your interview go?" I asked her. "I got the job. Your mother is now working woman. It's a this really nice real a local diner. The pay could be better but at least I'm bring in some money. Well, honey I am at Jade's Dragon. I'll be home soon." she said "Okay bye, mom. I love you" "I love you, too."she said and we both hung up the phone. I went outside and sat on the back porch. I looked over at the neighbor's yard, hoping he was outside. Instead, I saw the girl that was sitting with Thomas as well as another, older guy. The guy also seemed to be too perfect, with his bleach blonde hair, blue eyes, tan, slightly more muscular then Thomas but not as big as the other one. He could be an underwear model or even an actor. They all were beautiful.I tried not to stare at them as they talked but I couldn't help it. "Is she staring again?" I heard the girl say. I heard and looked away, out to the ocean."Be nice, Audrey." I heard the other guy say. I quickly turned my head away from them and stared out into the endless ocean. I heard my mom pull up to the house, so I went out front to help her."How was school?" she asked while I grabbed some plates. "It was nice" I said. "That's good. Do you have a lot of classes with Taylor and Alexis?" she asked as she set the table. "Yeah, a few." I told her. "That's nice." she said. She wasn't the type to pry really. We've always had a good relationship. After dinner I went up stairs to check my e mail before I did my homework, which I didn't have much of. I turn on my new computer and signed on. I had two new e mails from my dad. Wanting to know how everything was. I told him that things were good and that I had to start my homework. Which I barely had. I wasn't really in the mood to do homework but I knew I had to get it done. I tried my hardest to concentrate on my Spanish homework but thinking of Thomas kept my mind pretty busy.I couldn't believe he actually talked to me. Even if it was only for a moment. My head was spinning thinking about him. Maybe I was obsessing...A little.. I laughed at myself. The next few weeks Thomas would say hi to me and I still couldn't get him off my mind. Every time I sat next to him in English and history I stared at him. I was hopeless. I tried to talk to him a few times but, stupid me, chicken out. Alexis and Taylor told me to talk to him, to not be afraid. So, finally on Wednesday I decided to speak to him. 'He's just some boy...Some really hot boy...Just a boy ' I said to myself, over and over again. "Hi"I said after English class. "Hi"he said with a soft smile. I froze for a moment."I.ah..Did you understand the homework for English?"I asked him. "Somewhat.Did you?"he said. "Not really.. I'm not really good when it comes to Shakespeare."I lied. I knew Romeo and Juliet like the back of my hand. "Would you like me to come over and maybe help you?" he said. "Sure. I mean if you don't mind." "I'll be over later today." he said. "Did you talk to him?"Alexis asked me eagerly in history class. "Yes, he's coming over later to help me with our English homework."I whispered to her. She smiled and then whispered it to Taylor.I watched Thomas again in the lunch room, sitting with his family. They were talking among themselves, they seemed to be arguing a little. I watched as Thomas got up from his seat and walk out of the lunch room."I wonder what that was about?"Taylor said."Who knows" Alexis said. Finally I was home, I walked out onto my balcony, which was the only place I would really relax.I closed my eyes and laid back into one of my two chairs."Emily" my mom said as she knocked on my bedroom door. "Yeah, mom." I said as I got up from my chair. "Some boy is here for you." She said smiling as she walked out onto my balcony. "Thomas?" I said a little too happily. "Yes" I jumped up and raced down stairs praying I wouldn't fall.I stopping at a mirror hanging at the end of the stairs to make sure I was decent. "Hello" I said as I opened the door and there he was.A picture of perfection. He was wearing tan shorts and a blue t shirt which brought out his blue eyes. "Hi" he said with a smile. "Hi" I said back to him. I couldn't believe he was standing in my doorway. I showed him to the dinning room table."I have to get my book bag. I'll be right back."I said as my mom walked into the room. "Mom,this is Thomas.Thomas this is my mom Cara"I turned around and said. "It's a pleasure to meet you,Cara"I heard Thomas say as I walked, no more like ran, upstairs to grab my book bag. I could hear my mom try and make small talk with Thomas, and fail miserably."Thomas, how long have you and your family lived here?" she asked him. "About two months now.We just moved in next door." he said. "Where did you live before?" she asked him curiously. "Japan and before that we lived in Russia for a few years. We travel a lot." he said. "Are your parents in the army or something?" I hear my mom ask him. "No, actually they died a very long time ago." he said. "Oh, I am so sorry." my mom said."My brother has a job that requires us to travel."he said I entered the dinning room and placed my book bag on the table. "I'll leave you two alone." she said and left the room. "Sorry" I said. "Don't worry about it." he said. "Shall we?" he said as he opened his book Romeo and Juliet. "I'm sorry about your parents... It must be terrible to lose both of them." I said. "It was very hard. But time heals all wounds and I've had a lot of time.." he said You could tell in his voice that he missed them.. I wanted to ask what happened but I was afraid too. I let it go and we started working on our homework. It was 7o'clock by the time we finished our homework."That was too bad, was it?" he asked me. "No, not really." I said. " I should probably get going." he said as he stood up to leave." You don't have to.. I mean if you want to stay for a little longer you can." I said sounding desperate. "Okay. Would you like to go outside and talk?" he asked me. "Yeah, sure." I said and we walked out to the back porch. The sun was slowly going down making the sky a beautiful pink and red color. "It's nice out here." I said. "Yes, it is. I like being near the ocean." Thomas said as we sat on the three steps leading down to our small back yard. " I do, too." "So tell me Emily, have you always lived here?" Thomas asked me. "I did live in Maine for a couple of years but I don't really remember it. We moved here when I was three, this home to me and probably always will be...What about you?" I said. "This is home, now... We've moved a lot..Every two to three years." he said, his voice sounded a little sad. "Why don't you guys just settle in one place?" I said. "It's complicated." he said."My brother, Matthew, his job causes us to pick up and leave." "oh" I said sadly. I just met him and I didn't want him to leave in two years or ever."We aren't leaving anytime soon" he said smiling, which made me smile. "Tell me about you." he said. "What would you like to know?" I asked him. "Everything" he said. That night we, well mostly I talked while he listened. We talked about everything I liked. My favorite flowers, movies, music, books and so on. My father. We talked for a good three hours before my mom told me to come in. Tonight being with him felt like a dream. Everything was perfect. I told him goodbye and tried to go to bed. All of my thoughts were still about him and everything we talked about. It was almost like a dream..A really good dream.I fell asleep thinking of him,so naturally I dreamed about him. It was a warm, sunny day in a place I've never been before. There Thomas was sitting next to me on a swing holding my hand, both of us were dressed as if it was the early 1700's rather than 2000. Two little children, eight or nine, playing in the small yard in front of us, as we watched. We were happy and what seemed to be,in love.I looked down at our hands and there on my left ring finger sat a beautiful pear shaped diamond ring. At the end of the dream,I stood in front of a mirror the reflection looked like me, but I knew it wasn't me. A strange man came behind the woman staring back at me in the mirror and slit her throat, I watched in horror was she bled to death. I woke up from my dream, still in a haze and dripping in a pool of my own sweat, the dream felt so real. As if I wasn't dreaming at all.I couldn't seem to fall back to sleep so I decided to take a hot shower and get ready for school. I put on my favorite pair of shorts and a blue shirt. By the time I was done I still had an hour until Alexis and her mom came, so I went out to my balcony. The warm breeze came off the ocean felt like a little bit of heaven. I stood there staring out into the darkness. I couldn't get the dream off my mind."What happened to you?" I said out loud. "Who are you talking, too?" I heard a voice. I turned towards the voice to see who it was. There he stood completely quite and still in the dark."Thomas?" I asked. "Hey" he said as he walked closer to me and touched my hand. "Wha..H-How did you get up here?" I asked him a little startled. "I'm a pretty good climber." he said smiling. "Oh"I said and turned to face the darkness. "Is everything okay?" he asked me. "I had a strange dream" I said. "Would you like to talk about it?" he asked me. I turned to face him. His skin glowed in the moonlight,he was beautiful."It was only a dream." I told him I didn't feel like reliving the dream right now."We talked about me all night last night.. Tell me about you" I said to him. "What do you want to know?" he asked me. "Everything" I said as I turned my head to look at him "Alright.I was born in London,England to two middle class parents,I am the third out of six kids." "Unfortunately,They all died.. James and I are the only ones left." he said while looking down. "I'm sorry" I told him. 'How awful' I thought to myself."Will you tell me about your family?"I asked him. "My brother James,is the oldest of all of my siblings and myself. He's always been pretty much the glue that holds us together. He's always been there with me throughout the bad times as well as the good ones. He is dating Audrey, the girl who sits with us at lunch. They've been together for a really long time. She had a twin sister who died around the time that she met my brother. Audrey isn't the kindest person in the world. She's very difficult at times." "Then their is Matthew, who is actually my brother in-law or well was.See he married my eldest sister Alice and three months after they were wed Alice died. Now he has Iris, who is his life. Iris, well no one can ever say anything bad about Iris. She's the sweetest woman in the world. She's like a mother to all of us,always kind and caring. We met her in Ireland, while we were on vacation a few years ago." he said. You could tell that he really cared for each of his family members they way his face light up a little when he talked about them."What happened to you parents and brothers and sisters?"I asked him. "They all got sick..Really sick...." he said. "I'll tell you about it another time. But since your ride will be here soon, you should go."he said to me. "Okay, I'll see you at school then" I told him.He smiled at me and brushed my hair out of my face. Our eyes locked. I felt like nothing else mattered to me....only him, only this moment.. My heartbeat was accelerating. Beating faster and faster. "Kiss Him!" a voice yelled at me in my head. I wanted to, more then anything. To feel his lips against mine, to hold him tight. I wanted it more than anything. But I didn't kiss him, instead he lead forward and kissed me on my cheek. "Bye, Emily" he said and left. He left me stunned. My head was spinning when he kissed my cheek. It took me a moment to realize that Alexis will be here any minute. I hurried down stairs and out of the house. By the time I got outside Alexis and her mom where waiting for me."Hey, Emily, about time." she said to me. "Hey,sorry I didn't realize what time it was." I said back as I climbed in the back of the car. We got to school in no time, and in the parking lot was their red convertible. I couldn't wait to see Thomas in English, so I hurried to my class. He was already in his seat.As soon as I walked in our eyes met and we smiled at each other. I didn't pay much attention to Mrs.White when she started teaching. My mind was millions of miles away.I stared mostly at the back of Thomas's head. Maybe I was obsessing. But I felt like I had to know him. Like we were connected, somehow.'I'm obsessing..Definitely.'I thought to myself. The bell rang and I gathered my stuff up to go to Spanish."Hey Em, what are you doing for your birthday?"Lex asked me. My birthday? I didn't realize that it was almost here, only two weeks until I turned seventeen."I don't know yet."I said. "Do you want to do the usual?"she asked me.The usual was dinner, some shopping and a movie."Sounds great"I said.In history we had a pop quiz. Which I was pretty sure I failed.By the time lunch came I was hoping to see him again. But when I got there all I did was I stared at their table, watching them. They were laughing, they all seemed really happy. "Emily...Emily.. Earth to Emily" Lex said finally getting my attention."Sorry" I said. "Is everything okay?" she asked me. "Yeah, I didn't get much sleep" I told her. "Oh,well we were talking about the homecoming dance, which is next month. Are you going to with Thomas?" Lex asked me as the bell rang."I would like to, he hasn't asked me." I said as I got up to go to my next classes. "Well, maybe he will. We still have plenty of time"Taylor said."Who are you going with?"I asked them."Steve Mcmasters asked me today in history."Lex said. Steve was a decent boy, with straight A's and sandy blonde hair. He was perfect for Lex. Plus Lex has had a crush on him all last year. "Aiden Williams asked me last week"Taylor said.Aiden, was a shy basketball player,he was sweet but I wasn't sure he was really Taylor's type. The rest of the day went by with a blur,I desperately tried to get him off my mind.Which apparently wasn't that easy. Before I knew it I was home. My mom was working late, a double shift. We needed the money though. I took my bookbag and placed it on the kitchen table. I didn't feel like doing homework right now and I went upstairs to change into some more comfortable clothes. I heard the phone ring as I just finished getting dressed. "Hello?"I said as I walked out of my bedroom and answered the phone."Hey"a familiar voice said. "Hi,Dad" I said as I slowly walked back to my room."How are you? How's the weather?"he asked. "Good. It's really nice here. I like it."I said. "That's good. How's school been?Did you and Evan ever make up?" "No,dad we never made up..I met another boy,who I like.School's been good, dad." I told him. "Good. Well I wanted to see how you were. I have to get ready for my date." "Okay, bye dad."I said rolling my eyes. My father seems to be dating a new girl every week.. He would always call out of the blue and only stay on the phone for a few minutes then say good-bye.He's always has been like that..Irritated I threw the phone on my bed. 'How could he move on so fast from my mom ' I thought to myself. I really didn't mind talking to my dad,I did miss him.I just hated hearing about his new girlfriend of the week. I was about to go out to my balcony when I heard a knock on the door.I walked slowly downstairs. Not really in the mood to have company.."Hello"I said kind of rudely."I thought maybe you would like some help with your homework.... Unless you finished it already." he said "No, actually I was just about to start it. But sure I'd love some help.Come in." I said."Is this a bad time?"Thomas asked before he walked into my house."My dad just called.."I told him."Oh, sorry"he said."It's okay.He just knows how to get under my skin." I told him.We sat at the kitchen table, ready to do our homework. We started with history, we just had to write an essay on the civil war. Which Thomas strangely seemed to knew a lot about. I was sure to get an A with his help. "How do you know so much about this?" I asked him. "My... My great great grandfather was in the civil war.He use to keep a journal of what was happening."he said. "Oh"I said. He smiled and we went back to work. We finished our homework in no time. "Are you hungry?"I asked him. "No, I'm fine.Thank you."he said as he gathered his books up. "I am" I said as I was looking threw the fridge. Trying to find something that looked good. "I should probably go.So you can eat."he said. "You don't have too."I told him. I didn't want him to leave. I was in a much better mood since he got here."Today is Iris's birthday. I have to get home before she does."he said. "Okay.Well I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for all your help."I told him. "No problem.I actually won't be in school tomorrow.. I have to go somewhere with James. I'll be back on Monday."he said.'three long days without him.How am I going to survive? ' I thought to myself. "Oh,well I'll see you then." "Goodbye,Emily"he said as he walked over and kissed me on my cheek."Bye"I whispered. That night I dreamt about Thomas. The next day at school wasn't anything special. I know he said he wasn't going to be there but a part of me hoped he would be there. And he wasn't there. I slowly walked to my desk.I paid more attention to Mrs.White talking. I never noticed how really annoying her voice was. At lunch it I stared at there empty table.I figured Audrey would at least be here, but she wasn't. None of them were. Saturday finally came and my mom had the day off so we were going to do some early birthday shopping for me. We went to a small clothing store were I got a couple new outfits. I loved our mother daughter shopping trips.I've missed her a lot.Since she got her new job I feel like we barely see each other anymore. "One more week Em,until your seventeen."she said as we walked back to her car."I know. Do you think dad is still going to get me a car?"I asked her.Which I already knew the answer. But for once I hoped he would pull through. "I'm not sure, sweetie."she said.Which meant probably not. We ate dinner at a small diner, which the food was really good.Once we got home I put my clothes away and walked out to my balcony. I wished Thomas was here. I really wanted to see him. "two more days"I said to myself. Sunday seemed to be a very long day.I already did all my homework and cleaned most of the house, had one load of laundry left to do and it was only two o'clock..I couldn't wait until Monday, to see him.I went downstairs to check on the laundry.'Almost done ' I thought to myself. Once I walked back into my room I saw was a small box on my bed. I went over to open it. I slowly ripped off the light pink wrapping paper. Inside was a beautiful gold heart shaped locket it. "Think of it as an early birthday present" I heard a voice say behind me. "What are you doing here?"I asked him,he caught me by surprise."I got home early." Thank you, you didn't have to get me anything."I told him."I know" he said as he walked closer to me."I really love it. Would you help me put it on?" I asked him. I pulled my hair to the side so he could place my necklace around my neck. "It's beautiful.Thank you, again" I told him as I placed my right hand over the heart. "Your welcome" he said with a sly smile. "I saw it the other day and it made me think of you."he said as he placed his arms on my waist."I'm glad you're back." I told him and pulled me closer to him.I could feel his warm body next to min."I am too."he whispered in my ear."Where did you go?"I asked him."England." "England?" I asked. "Yeah, we had something important to do there."he said as pulled away and we walked out onto the balcony. We stared into each other's eyes for what seemed like an eternity. My heart beat was accelerating once again. He pulled me closer to him, once again.Having his warm body next to mine was like heaven. He moved his left hand from my waist and up to my lower back, I couldn't breathe.I couldn't think. I only knew one thing, that I wanted nothing more then for him to kiss me, to feel his warm smooth lips on mine, right here, right now. He placed his other hand under my chin, gently pulling my face up to meet his. Our eyes closed as he came closer. Our lips only inches apart, then the unthinkable happened...The phone rang. He dropped his hand from the back of under my chin and pushed himself away from me."Sorry" I said awkwardly and breathless. "You should probably get that" he said. I ran to the hall. Cursing whoever was calling and interrupted this almost perfect moment."Hello?" I said with slightly an attitude."Emily, hey honey. How are you?" My father asked."Great" I said as I walked back to my room with the cordless phone in my hand."That's good"He said. I sat next to Thomas on my bed. "Hey I wanted to tell you that Marie and I are coming down next weekend." he said. Marie was my fathers new toy of the month. Since things ended with my mom and her best friend he thinks he needs to be with as many women as he can. "Where are you going to stay?" I asked him. "We are getting a hotel room. No worries. Well, hey kiddo I have to run. Be good. Love ya." "Love you, too" I said and hung up."Is everything okay?" Thomas asked me as he brushed a stand of my hair out of my face."Yeah, my dad is bring his new girlfriend down, next weekend." I told him and rolled my eyes."You don't like her?" he asked me. "I've never met her... This would be his sixth just this month." I told him."Sixth?"he asked me."Yeah, ever since the divorce he thinks he needs to have as many girlfriends as he can get or something."I said."I should be going." he said as he stood up to leave."Already?" I asked. "Yes, I promised Matthew I would help him with something important. Don't worry I'll see you at school tomorrow." he said as he kissed the top of my head.I hated when he left.. I went over and closed my balcony doors and plopped down on my bed staring up at the ceiling. I hated when he left. Why couldn't he stay forever? I knew I was falling hard and very fast for this boy. Which wasn't like me. I didn't believe in the whole love at first sight, but I can not dent what I am feeling for him. When I met him it was like Evan never even mattered. My feelings for Thomas are stronger than what I ever had for Evan. |
