Chapter two
Chapter 2

The crimson red and golden lockers were being noisily opened by students that clearly didn’t want to attend the early morning classes. Olivia and her boyfriend Kyle bounded down the stairs, hand in hand. Making me mentally gag. Why did they have to be so cute together, like Barbie and Ken. The prince and princess of Cougar Falls High. It didn’t look like I should be best friends with them but I was. Compared to me, I looked like I should be sitting in a corner, sulking about life. Olivia’s bleach blond hair was cut jagged and short, accentuating every party of her angular face. Kyle, he was definitely gorgeous. One of the boys that every girl would spend hours trying to impress. His bleach blond hair matched Olivia’s but was always waxed into perfection. Sticking out this way and that. A look only certain people could pull off. His dimples glowed every time he smiled and his too perfect teeth glistened in the light. But no one was ever worth this time, because he had his heart and soul set on the one girl that he was attached to the hip. My best friend Olivia. As they made their way towards me, I rolled my eyes, making sure I made a very clear exaggeration of my fake disgust for their cuteness.

“Hey guys. Did you do your homework? I got kind of distracted last night so I was wondering if I could borrow your worksheets from psychology.” I usually did my homework, but lately I had been extremely distracted. Consumed with my thoughts that wouldn’t leave me alone.

“Oh wait, what’s this? Little miss goody two shoes didn’t do her homework?!” Kyle pestered me as I kept walking, stopping to glower at him. Giving him one of the dirtiest looks possible.

“Look, I’ve just been caught up in things. Can I please have it or not.”

“Oh, does Anna finally have a boyfriend?” Knowing this would push my buttons, I tried to ignore him. Not wanting to give him what he wanted.

“Shut up babe, you know Anastasia doesn’t like it when you bother her about that stuff.” She was always there to stick up for me. Helping me when I had problems. But for some reason I could never tell her about my reoccurring night terrors. Right before I would speak of it to her, my stomach would get a raw clenching feeling. Threatening to rip a line of flesh from my belly button to my neckline.

“Don’t worry about it, I’m used to you guys making fun of me.” As we all laughed walking down the hallway, I couldn’t ignore the feeling of my hairs sticking up on end on the back of my neck. Telling me that the presence of someone, or something, unwanted was near.

Kyle and I parted our ways from Olivia, making our way to psych class. Mr. Hardy was doing his usual morning tradition. Eating a chocolate bar and sipping on warm milk. Everyone had always thought he was strange. As the bell rang, we took our seats, and Mr. Hardy started his long stretching day of teaching. Mr. Hardy was one of those teachers that seemed like he should be a pedophile you meet off the internet. Always looking down girl’s shirts, or checking out their butts as they swayed past him. He always made me uncomfortable when his slate black eyes would peer into mine, making me squirm in my seat. His look made me feel useless, and especially vulnerable. I growled, a low sound bubbling in the back of my throat, that gurgled up when i felt the smack of a bunched up piece of paper hit the side of my face. I looked behind me to see who threw it at my face. No one made any gesture, so i figured it was nothing. Once i had returned to my work, i felt another thud of paper against the side of my face, flying off towards Kyle.

“Quit throwing stuff at me Kyle, you sit right beside me, why don’t you just tell me. No need to be conspicuous.” I said, giving him the second dirtiest look i could scrounge up.

“It wasn’t me stupid. I would talk to you out loud if i had something to say to you.” He exclaimed.

I twisted my body in my seat acting as if i were trying to crack my back, doing it slowly until i heard the -pop, pop, pop of my back. Quickly sliding my eyes across the classroom trying to get some notion of who might have been flinging these balls of paper ridiculously hard at the side of my face. But once again, no gestures. I decided i might as well open up the notes to see if there was anything important in them. I slowly pulled apart the crinkled pieces of paper from the first ball and searched the paper for any important words but there were none there. I shook my head, making a scoffing noise in the back of my throat causing Mr. Hardy to bore his eyes into mine.
