Thalia has to say goodbye to someone she loves, and someone she never met at the same time. |
Thalia was in her room when she first heard her mother cry out in pain in the next room. She smiled. Finally...It was the day she had been waiting for over the past nine months. She bounced out her bedroom door and into the living room, where she scooped up her mother's shoes. Then she ran to her mother's room and opened the door. "Hey, mom," she said. "Are you okay?" "Yeah," her mom moaned, screwing up her face in pain. "It's time?" Her mom nodded. "It's time. Stick my shoes on my feet, will you, please?" "Sure," Thalia replied, doing just that. She continued to smile while she tied her mother's shoes. When both shoes were secure to her feet, Thalia's mother stood up and walked to the door, with help from her daughter. "Call your dad," she said. "We need him to drive." Thalia grabbed the house phone from the charger on their way out the bedroom door, and dialed her father's cell phone number. 'Drrerring! Drrerring! Drrerring!' She heard ringing, followed by her father's voice. "Hello?" "Hey, Dad," she said into the phone. "This is Thalia... Mom just went into labor, and we need you over here." "Oh, God," he said. "Okay, honey, I'll be right there. Love you." "Love you, too, dad. Bye." "Bye," he said, and hung up. Thalia hung up, also. "He's on his way over here, mom. Now, just sit back, and rel-" "Don't tell me what to do!" she yelled, and Thalia decided not to bother her anymore after that... she was obviously in pain. A few minutes passed before Thalia's father came ramming through the front door. "Come on, guys, I have the car ready." Thalia proceded out to the car as he helped her mother behind her. The car ride to the nearest hospital was kind of awkward, and very, very loud. Just about every 10 seconds, Thalia's mom made strange grunts or screams that concerned her young daughter. Thalia would ask her mother if she was alright almost every time, and every time her mom would respond, "I'm okay," or "Don't worry, honey." When they finally reached the hospital, they made their way towards the emergency room, her mother in a wheelchair pushed by a nurse, with Thalia and her father walking next to her. They arrived at the room which the baby would be born in, but Thalia had to stay outside. Another nurse waited outside with her, and they exchanged a bit of conversation. "So," the nurse said. "Are you excited to have a little sister?" "Yep!" Thalia replied. "That's good. Did you and your parents think of any names?" "We thought of a lot, and we picked Madeline Rose. But I just like 'Maddy'. " The nurse smiled. "Me too, though Madeline Rose sounds pretty." "Yah." "So what's your name?" asked the nurse. "Thalia Marie...And my last name is Dean. Thalia Marie Dean." "Thalia? That's a pretty name." "Thank you." The door swung open, and a grim Mr.Dean (Thalia's dad) took a step towards them. "Hi, Dad," Thalia said. "Thalia," he said, walking towards her slowly. "There's something that I need to tell you." "Yah, Dad?" she said as he sat next to her. "The baby didn't make it," he said, looking down sadly. A tear ran down his cheek. "And neither did your mom." (I know, it's kind of short, but oh well.) |
