Written for my son in his younger days.
Mama’s Ode to Marijuana
by Rose of Sharon

My Mama just don’t like you,
She says you ain’t my friend.
Dog-snake, You wag your tail
Then you strike me on the shin.

Says you’re Clippin’ my wings
With a knife of hazy dreams,
Ambition, a never worn coat,
Frayin’ at ragged seams.

Says I light you up with fire
But you take away my own,
With poisonous smiling lips
Suck marrow from my bone.

Says I’m tumblin’ down a pit
Free fallin’ from the sky.
Smoke foggin ’ my direction,
I think I’m climbin’ high.

Says you breathe denial
To fill my empty cup,
We may grow old together,
But never will grow up.

My Mama she don’t like you
Says you’re not my kind.
You’re breakin’ up her heart,
As you’re takin’ up my mind.

Lord of Tomorrow
and dreams never true,
God deliver my body
And my soul from you.
