A group of close friends and family are brought closer together by the events of war.
Matthew glanced sideways at Max, and at the same time, she glanced at him, when their eyes locked, he quickly averted his gaze. But Max gestured at the empty seat beside her, and beckoned Matt to sit next to her. 'So, how you doing?' Matt shyly asked. 'How do you think I'm doing dumbass?' Matt looked as if the devil had just appeared in front of him. But Max started laughing really hard. Something dawned on Matt. He turned around and said 'George! I thought I told you to stop mimicking people's voices!'
The 10 year old's cute kid voice replied 'I'm sorry Matt, I just couldn't help myself' his face pouting. Matt could never stay angry at his younger brother. He was, after all, his only family left. Matt, George and Charlie were one whole, orphaned family. The girl he was hitting on (Max, obviously) had 2 sisters, they were orphaned too. But they had been adopted by the same foster parents. Not biological, because hooking up with an actual sister would be creepy. But since they weren't actually related, it was okay. Matt turned back to Max, and wondered whether she liked him too. It was all so complicated, puberty. He and Max were the same age, 14. They were the bosses of each half of the family, taking care of their younger siblings when their parents were away. Matt decided to not pursue Max with his hopeless attempts at flirting. So he looked out of the plane's window, and wondered where they were now. He looked at his flip-up screen, and saw we were over the sea of Japan. I pressed the attendant button and, unlike economy, the Air hostess came almost immediately, and asked what he wanted. 'Can I get a Non-alcoholic Mojito please?' having pretty rich parents who bought you tickets in business class certainly had it's advantages, Matt thought while waiting for his drink to arrive. He had gotten hooked on Mojitos, and whenever he could get his hands on, but for now he just had to settle for the non alcoholic version. A voice broke his thoughts 'I thought you said you had gotten off Moweetos Matthew!' He chuckled at Jean's attempt to say the word 'Mojito', even though she was only 7, and hadn't really grasped how to say complicated words yet. The girl's brunette mop appeared above the middle of Max and Matthew's seat. 'Put your belt on, we're landing soon.' Matt said. And right on cue, the PA announced that the plane was beginning it's decent into Beijing. I wondered what surprises would await our family in China...
