Marvin Gaye relevant today |
WHAT’ GOING ON? “What’s going on?” is Marvin Gaye’s 1960’s inquiry of the radical events that were swirling around him. What’s going on today? I wonder. The economy is busted. There’s no jobs left in America. They’ve been sent overseas where labor can be exploited in ways we won’t agree. The first black president is no longer listening or even still saying, “Yes We Can”. He’s elevated the national debt to an infinite set of zero’s and took a sharp turn that looks very much like socialism. Guantanamo Bay is still open for business. The troops are still in Iraq and more are on the way to Afghanistan. Oil is gushing up from the ocean floor at an alarming rate and if BP can stop it for the Gulf’s ecosystem it will be too late. Its push and pull with the talking heads and even those who think we’d be better off dead. “What’s going on?” Marvin Gaye asked at a time when American was melting into pods of revolution. What would he ask about Obamacare, taxes, redistribution of wealth and the expansion of Big Brother? Perhaps he would join another popular anthem of the time. FOR GOD’S SAKE WE’VE GOT TO GIVE MORE POWER TO THE PEOPLE |
