Member of Parliament

I am tired of my relationship with my MP. If this relationship was romantic I would have ended it long ago.  Having an MP you didn’t vote for is rather like living in an arranged marriage, an arranged marriage where you met 3 guys and chose one and got someone else.  But his other wives think you will be perfect for each other. And then you go to a restaurant and he orders for you. And he asks for all the food you don’t like but not the food you do. But that’s ok because he represents you now.

And you can’t get divorced. You just have to wait for five years and then you can say that you don’t like him. But all the other wives like him so that’s ok. Your view doesn’t count. And sometimes you ask him – “would you order me squid today?” Or “Actually I really really hate fruit salad – could I have ANY other pudding?” But he doesn’t listen. You have to stick with pork chops and fruit salad forever.

And he doesn’t really like to communicate. You ask him questions and he dodges talking about his real feelings. He always quotes other people. He never makes any promises so that you can never say he broke any. You tell him that you are worried about something and he fobs you off. Your friend says “Don’t waste your energy on a relationship that is going nowhere” but if you stop trying then you have become his doormat. Just like everyone else.
 
But not quite everyone else. Because lots of these wives must like him. Because they chose him. Do they like pork chops and fruit salad? You don’t know.  Could you convince them that some other husband would be better? Probably not.  What would you do in my shoes?

And then one day, someone does something to hurt you. And he is the only one who can do anything to protect you. So you ask him to help, but he says that he agrees with the person hurting you. And you cannot defend yourself. This is democracy.
