I'm trying to listen and my soul won't stop chattering with the souls of strangers.

The Secret Life of a Soul

1.
Strangers

Someone please tell my soul
to stop talking to strangers.

I remind her all the time
but does she listen?

No, she keeps chattering
with every soul she meets
as if they were best friends
and I'm merely her taxi driver.

Meanwhile, the strangers and I,
we just stand around in awkward silence,

too embarassed to ask each other,
“Have we met?”

2.
So Hilarious

“What did you say?,”
I had to ask a grandmother
who came to my office
seeking custody of her grandchildren.

It was our first time to meet
but our souls were cracking up.
They were giggling so loud
I couldn’t even hear the woman speak.

Then my soul whispered in my ear,
"You're gonna get a kick out of this one!
She is so hilarious.”

And I have to admit,
I’m dying to find out
what these two crazy souls
have been joking about.

3.
Saying Goodbye

She muttered something foreign
as she ended the conversation
on her cell phone.

I couldn't place the language,
but when our eyes met,
she smiled and nodded

toward the only empty seat
in the busy terminal,
hastily shifting her carrry-on
from the seat to her lap.

I returned the nod in thanks,
grateful for her kindness,
and we both anxiously awaited
the boarding call.

Having no common language,
small talk was out of the question.
But in the silence,
our souls began chattering
in a language neither of us understood.

We sat there, impatient,
like children waiting for our mothers
to take a breath in their conversation,
having been taught not to interrupt.

When we arrived at our destination,
our eyes met one last time
as she looked past me
to search the crowd for a familiar face.

I gave an embarassed little wave goodbye
and she did the same.  Then she walked away.

Disappointment tugged at my shirtsleeves.
Or, perhaps it was the anxious reaction
from my wistful little soul
as it finally dawned on her
that this new friend of hers
would not be joining us on our trip.
