A New Year

A better year

December is coming to an end. We prepare to say good-bye to a year that brought us more bad economic news, a hot summer and a harsh winter. This past year brought little happiness and for that reason we are very happy to greet the New Year.

We started 2010 full of hope for a lot of changes. We wanted to see if the promises made about improving the economy and bringing an end to the wars would come true. We wanted something good to happen to all Americans.

Some things did change. The Obama administration is taking credit for passing healthcare reform. The problem is that the legislation contains items that nobody likes and few people have read the more than 2000 pages. It passed, but nobody knows what it means. Small businesses are hesitant to invest, banks are not lending money and even the insurance companies seem to lack any understanding of the bill.

This country has taken a step back as far as the rights of immigrants. For Hispanics, immigration reform looked possible and the DREAM act, with a Democratic Party in control, could finally be passed. Needless to say, those two items became entangled in the political battles and they were nobody’s priorities. After losing the November elections which Obama called a “shellacking”, nobody expects the new Congress dominated by GOP politicians to bring us good news. In fact, Hispanics and other immigrants will now be on the defensive. The GOP is threatening to revoke the rights under the 14th amendment regarding citizenship for anybody born in the United States.  And the Obama administration, instead of the promising change, is taking credit for increased border security and a larger number of deportations.

As we prepare to start the New Year 2011, we hope that in spite of their previous record GOP politicians will see the wisdom of the 14th amendment, will stop blocking the DREAM act, and will not block immigration reform. And that is perhaps a foolish hope but there is nothing else on the horizon. Good bye 2010. May we have a better and happier New Year.

Un mejor año

Diciembre se acaba. Nos preparamos a despedir un año que nos trajo más malas noticias de la economía, un verano muy caliente y un duro invierno. El año pasado no nos trajo la felicidad y por eso nos alegra vislumbrar el Año Nuevo.

Comenzamos el 2010 ilusionados con muchos cambios. Quisimos ver si las promesas de mejorar la economía y traer un fin a las guerras se realizarían. Deseamos que algo bueno sucediera a todos los estadounidenses.

Algunas cosas cambiaron. La administración de Obama quiere crédito por pasar la reforma del sistema de salud. El problema es que la legislación contiene artículos que nadie quiere y pocas personas han leído las más de 2000 páginas. Pasó, pero nadie sabe lo que significa. Las pequeñas empresa vacilan en invertir, los bancos no prestan dinero e incluso las compañías de seguros parecen confundidas con la legislación.

Este país ha tomado un paso atrás en cuanto a los derechos de inmigrantes. Para los hispanos la reforma de inmigración parecía posible y el proyecto de ley “DREAM Act” con el Partido demócrata en control, por último podría ser aprobado. Por supuesto esos dos artículos se enredaron en las batallas políticas y terminaron por no ser prioridades. Después de perder las elecciones de noviembre que Obama llamó una "paliza", nadie espera que el nuevo Congreso, dominado por políticos del Partido Republicano, traiga buenas noticias. De hecho, los hispanos y otros inmigrantes ahora estarán a la defensiva. El Partido Republicano amenaza con revocar los derechos bajo la enmienda decimocuarta con respecto a ciudadanía para cualquier bebé nacido en Estados Unidos. Y la administración de Obama, en vez del cambio prometedor, toma crédito por medidas más drásticas en la seguridad fronteriza y un número más grande de deportaciones.

Al prepararnos para comenzar el Año Nuevo 2011, esperamos que a pesar de su política previa, el Partido Republicano entienda la sabiduría de la 14ª enmienda, cese el bloqueo del “DREAM Act” y no obstaculice la  reforma de inmigración. Y eso es quizás una esperanza insensata pero no hay nada más en el horizonte. Adiós al fin a 2010. Y esperamos un mejor y próspero Año Nuevo.
