Story Starters


1. A dairy worker develops the uncanny ability to communicate with livestock.

2. You are a lawyer discovers that his client is guilty of the horrible crime for which he was just found innocent.

3. You finally made it: You're at your first book signing. The room's packed. Stacks of book surround you as people line up, eager for the few seconds of conversation they'll have with you. After signing the 20th book, you look up and can't believe who's standing in front of you. Tell us who it is and write the conversation.

4. (Fill in the blank) Seven days ago, ________________. Now, nobody will talk to me.

5. You answer the door to find a salesman touting the latest high-tech writing gadget, which he promises will change your life. He's so convincing that you give in, not even tatting an eyelash at the steep price. Write the salesman's presentation that resulted in the sale.

6. A gambler at a private high stakes poker game is caught cheating.

7. After years with a traveling carnival, the strong man and the bearded lady try to adjust to a normal life as a married couple.

8. Someone breaks into your home, but all he steals is a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs and a gallon of milk. Write a story from the thief's pint of view.

9. I could have avoided all that trouble if only I had remembered to…….

10. Pretend you're the offspring of a villainous literary character (no fairy tales, please), and your parent's worst nightmare has come true: You're nowhere near evil. Write a letter to your parent telling him or her why you're not interested in the dark side. Fe funny, be serious, be angry.

11. Write a review of a horror flick from the perspective of your favorite monster or ghoul.

12. You are up to your ears in projects when a literary character shows up at your home or office. He's looking to be a temp, so put him to work. Write a note to enclose with his pay at the end of the day, highlighting what he's done and what he's earned.

13. A husband and wife (girlfriend and boyfriend) quickly find themselves in reality television hell.

14. Your plane crashes on a deserted island. You and two other passengers survive. The only salvageable items from the plane are pair of scissors, a stopwatch and an electric keyboard. Use these items creatively to get off the island.

15. Write the last line to an unwritten novel that's so intriguing that others won't help but want to read the book.

16. You've recently purchased a new house. Upon your first full night there, you begin to hear noises but think nothing of it—until you see something that convinces you the house is haunted.

22. You drank a little too much green beer on St. Patrick's Day and can't remember the night. A friend calls to check up on you and fills you in on what happened—and why she has your pants.

23. You're 12 years old and have entered a school Halloween costume contest. There's stiff competition, though you're confident you'll win—until you find out someone has bribed the judge. Write this scene.

30. You've accidentally dialed the wrong phone number, but the person who answers sounds familiar. Immediately he/she recognizes you, but because made the call you're too embarrassed to ask who it is. Using only dialogue, figure out who the person is.

31. You head into the bathroom at work, walk into a stall and close the door. Moments later, as you leave the stall, you notice two people standing there and there's one major problem: They are of the opposite sex. On the spot, you make up an excuse as to why you are in their bathroom. #



Persuasive Journal Prompts for Academic Writing

Please remember these were used in a high school classroom. So, change them to fit your needs.

1) Write about your self as a writer. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What kind of writing do you like to do best? What is easiest about writing? What is the hardest thing about writing for you? What might help you become a better writer? Why is writing important?


2) Parents, schools, and society all impose rules, but school especially has a set of rules that must be followed. Think of one school rule that you really dislike. Think of some good arguments against having this rule at your school. You might want to brainstorm some good arguments before you start. Then, write a letter to the principal and convince him to abandon this particular rule.


3) What would encourage children in your community to be more active and fit? Outline your plan of another, including the reasons why it would work, as though preparing a persuasive speech for the city council.


4) Pretend you are a Little League coach who is concerned about the poor sportsmanship shown by some parents of players. Write a letter to your players’ parents, persuading them to tone their responses at the games.


5) What is the best way to learn? Through lectures or by hands-on experiences? By discussing or by observing the concepts in action? Develop a plan for an ideal class, including your ideas about these questions.


6) Congress has decided that January 14th will be Teacher’s Day. What teacher that you have had do you think should be honored as an Outstanding Teacher? No coaches allowed unless they are outstanding classroom teachers. Think of some of the excellent teachers you have had in the past or recently. Pick one who you think should be honored. Remember that you must have good reasons and examples support.



7) “When it’s a question of choosing between people and animals, people must always come first.” Do you agree with this statement? Support your opinion


8) When is the last time you visited your public library? Write an article for your newspaper, encouraging your classmates to check out the public library. Explain all the things the library has to offer.


9) Write a letter to your parents and convince them that you need a new car. Be sure to tell them why your old one needs to go. You should have 3 good reasons that are supported with facts.


10) Will society find a ‘cure” for racism or crime or any of the other social ills that plague us? Imagine what it would take to cure a specific social problem. Explain your cure and tell how it would work.


11) Are supernatural characters like wizards and witches appropriate in children’s books? Write an editorial stating your opinion. Include supporting evidence.


12) Some business people argue that child labor is essential in third-world countries because the money children earn prevents families from starving. How would you answer this argument?


13) What are your feelings about teen violence? Are they related to personal experiences? Write a journal entry in which you explore these feelings.


14) Many adults are concerned about the best ways to prevent young people from smoking. Write an editorial aimed at adults, suggesting ways to do this.


15) Do you feel that violent video games are having a negative effect on teens? Write a persuasive essay on this topic. Be sure to support your position.



16) Parent conferences will be next Friday. Tell me the things you think I should tell your parents about your work and behavior in this class. Be sure to think of several of your best attributes you have displayed and give examples and evidence. It would be especially good for you to be positive.


17) Think of something you value highly, that you wish your parents valued, too. Write a letter that will persuade them of its value.


18) What issue is going on the news today do you feel strongly about? Write a letter to the editor of your school or local newspaper. Share your opinion. Try to persuade others to agree with you.


19) Write a letter offering encouragement to a friend or family member who is struggling with a difficult situation. If you cannot think of someone you know personally, write a letter to someone you know about from the news.


20) Is there something you would like you do that your parents will not allow you to do? Write an imaginary dialogue between yourself and your parents in which you try to convince them to give you permission to do as you ask. Be sure to explain why it is in your best interest. Also, in you dialogue, be sure to ask politely and with respect.


21) Is fame a blessing or a curse? Write a journal entry telling your opinion and discussing whether you would enjoy being famous.


22) Why should kids your age help others? Write an editorial for the school newspaper. Explain why students should volunteer in the community and name various places where they can help, such as homeless shelters, homes for the elderly, and childcare centers.


23) Write a letter to a person who inspires you to be a better person. Explain why you admire the person and how he or she influenced you.



24) Suppose you have a great idea for a new food product. Write a letter to a food company, describing the product and explaining why the company should manufacture it.


25) Write a letter to someone who can help save the environment. Express your feelings about pollution and persuade the person to take steps to stop it. You might write to a manager of a manufacturing company, an official of an environment group, or a government leader.


26) Bullying is rampart in our schools. We have found that in extreme cases it can lead to shooting and suicide. Bullying is a problem at our school. Even if someone says they are only kidding, is it still bullying? First, tell what you consider bullying to be. Then, tell me how you feel about bullying. Then, work out a plan for improving or wiping out bullyism here at THS.


27) You are selected for a panel discussion on how we can keep kids from getting their hands on guns. Draw up a plan that includes at least three different possible actions. Explain what you think each action will accomplish.


28) Convince your parents that you need to take an 8 day trip to Japan next summer and they need to help you raise the money which will be about $4800. Be sure to come up with several good reasons why you need to go and several good ways you can try to raise the bulk of the money.
