A poem about a relationship that you see is failing...but hasn't quite ended.

The Threat Of Fire

The smell is strong, it burns my nose.
It smells like smoke in here.
The air is thick,
but surprisingly so clear.

It started with a note
I found in your pocket one day.
It was from a girl you used to know,
asking you to come out and play.

You said you didn't call her.
You said you didn't go.
But your whereabouts are wishy-washy,
nothing set in stone.

Yesterday you smelled of perfume,
a scent I do not wear.
You said someone brushed against you at work,
do you even care?

Dinner is running later and later,
and sometimes you don't even come to bed.
You say that you are just so tired,
and fall asleep on the couch instead.

Our quiet times aren't quiet any more.
The silence filled with questions in my head.
Do I dare trust you?
When the truth I'm sure you haven't said.

The smell is getting stronger.
It smells like it is coming from the inside.
It smells like fire is imminent.
Our relationship will not survive.

I'm sure I know what I am smelling....
the smoke of our demise.
This last indescretion finishing us off,
burning us up alive.
