The reason for a gift

A Red Rose

A red rose was given to me.
Does it mean he's done something
of which to be guilty?
He never gives flowers,
for they will only die.
Spending money on such frivolous things,
he can not abide.

It matters not that I love them,
he could care less how I feel inside.
So why the red rose?
If I ask him, he will lie.
Questions block my enjoyment of such a beautiful thing.
Storms of doubt cloud my head.
I don't know what to believe.

The red rose has such beauty
rivaling the sunset over the sea.
The fragrance so potent
that it could almost make me believe,
that this red rose was given out of love;
and not because he felt guilty.

Almost, but not quite, for I know him too well.
The money spent,
he'd say set him back a spell..
But since receiving this beautiful gift
he hasn't said a word.
Money, waste, nor frivolous has crossed his lips.
Least not that I've heard.

Oh red red rose, given to me,
you're so beautiful and divine;
with petals as soft as a traitors kiss,
and thorns as sharp as knives.
I could enjoy you for any other reason......
Tell me why you've come to be mine?
Should I take this gift from my callous lover
of lying lips and a guilty heart,
as a sign?
