A poem I was inspired to write by a short story I read yesterday.Feedback appreciated! |
The Broken Mask, T'was o'er the hills, and far away, both you and I were forced to stay. T'was 'neath tall trees and gentle moon, that tenderly our love did bloom. T'was in the caves' loving embrace, that first we gazed 'pon loves' enchanted face. Your manner was cold, yet your heart was warm. Your face was strong, but your soul was sundered. You yearned for love, long sought, yet ne'er seen. Tho' when first we did embrace, the troubles of the word upon us, a moment of beauty was kindled. All malice banished. All apathy undone. All doubts denounced. The mask shattered, for 'neath it lay, your true form. T'was in the clearing we did stand, and there you took me by the hand. Ne'er to part, did you say, yet fate, had still his hand to play. A serpent struck, my body to maim, but his cruel tongue, did you tame. To save me though, it cost you dear, pierced you were, and it was clear, that your final moments, were numbered here. And now as God, does you claim, ne'er again, shall you call my name. Though as I harken to the stars, transfixed by the moonlight, I sadly whisper unto the listening night: "Wind of the north, Have you seen Robert, the tall by moon or by starlight? I saw him, through meadows green, through seven streams, through rivers wide and grey. From this, our home, I do look afar, to the forest and the wild, where no men are. What news from the north do thy bear? What news of my husband, for whom I've always cared? T'was 'neath the forests of old did he stand, my destiny he did command. Tho' now, his head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest; 'neath the forest floor,a lock of my hair 'pon his breast. |
