A young man and his girlfriend spend a day at the beach.
And Then There Were Us

I have this image in my head. You’re wearing tight black jeans with a white t-shirt, the one you know I love so much. You’re wearing sunglasses, even though the sun isn’t due up for hours.

You’re wearing converse shoes, the same as me, and your hair is blowing gracefully in the wind. We’re at a beach, somewhere In Santa Barbra, California. I still haven’t gotten used to the idea of being here; it’s all still so new to me.

We’re running around in the sand, having no idea as to what game we’re playing; I guess we just like chasing each other.

As we lay down, there’s a tingle inside me as I let my index finger trace a pattern from your forehead, down your nose and eventually I halt at your lips. Your eyes are sparkling with something, something I can’t really put in to words. I do know one thing though: it makes me feel like a king of the world.

I softly graze your upper lip and your body speaks to me. It speaks to me in a way I’ve never before experienced. You raise your right hand, slowly, up to my hair and as you let you fingers through it, time seems to stop.

Everything echoes around me and I can barely see the waves of the ocean move; drops of water hanging restlessly in the air before they crash down on the unsuspecting sand.

I can see straws of hair bending willingly as the wind sweeps across your face, your lips move to speak but I can’t hear what you’re saying.

The sound of your voice bouncing around in the air, your eyes glowing as you’re reaching the climax of your little tale and I’m trying my best not to let myself be distracted from the complex beauty of your being.

I smile and nod as you finish speaking. The world still revolving slowly, time seemingly not in a hurry what so ever to pass.

It is as though time itself finds us interesting, like it feels we deserve to have this moment, if only for a little while longer. I lean in and kiss you softly on your lips.

Your breath giving off the scent of pure green tea and the taste of strawberries exploding in my mouth as I reluctantly break our kiss.

You’ve closed your eyes, your hands leading you on paths down my chest and stomach, as if you’re searching for that which would reveal me to be a fraud. My heart aching with love for you, as if it has run out of ways to express it, but the wish and the will to do so is still very much alive.

A flock of seagulls sweep across the ocean and we know; dawn is approaching.

We wade in to the ocean, our toes sink in the wet sand underneath the clear blue surface. I notice you’re now wearing a thin white dress, clinging to your body as the hand of a new born grasping its mother’s finger for the first time.

The wind and the earth seem to be breathing now, a melody with a steady and haunting rhythm, echoing in the distance. You turn away from me and take a few steps toward the horizon. I hear you gasp.

“Honey, come over here.” Your voice giving away the fact that the water is chilling your bones, your nipples harden, making themselves noticeable on your chest. I walk slowly over to you, standing on your left side and I now realize what took your breath away.

The sun is rising.

The burning light of a new dawn set alight the horizon and I can feel the beat and the melody of the world increasing in volume, creating this warm feeling inside my chest and I feel it’s getting harder to breathe around all this beauty. The sunlight now plays on the surface of the water, reflecting in your eyes; making them sparkle yet again. I notice a smile forming on your lips.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” you whisper, yet to me it’s vast and echoing in volume. I move closer to you. I agree. You take my hand and look me straight in the eyes, the sunlight radiating toward me. The melody of the world now reaching as high as it goes and as your fingers grasp mine I understand; Mother Earth is singing to us.

“You’re something special, aren’t you?” I ask you, the feeling in my bones confirming what I’ve suspected for a long time. You smile that perfect smile; the one you know makes my heart ache and makes me long for you, now more than ever.

“You’re a goddess of the earth.” I state, my voice hoarse and spent; the beauty in front of me taking its toll. You simply nod and you pull me closer to you. My heart is racing as my hands travel down your arms and finally land on your waist. Your lips move to speak:

“Honey?”
“Yes?”
“Guess what?”
“What is it?”
“I love you.”

And then there were us; a goddess of the earth and a mere young man.
