I just wanted to share my last project for com 101 this semester. I recieved an A for this |
First off I would like to say, out of all the projects I’ve done in this class they never cease to amaze me. I loved this project just as I loved the others. They always show me something different; a new experience every time. This one was very interesting to me cause it involved my opinion and allowed me to watch a show i've never seen. I really enjoyed watching Jon Steward and the whole concept of his show. Yet and still he found a way to make me a concerned viewer. The story I found on both Fox News and The Daily Show with Jon Steward was about the floods. I felt that Jon steward didn’t cover all sides of the story, he just barely touched on one side. The point he touched one was obvious to everyone, but his presentation was great and funny just terribly lacking information and facts. He is also honest with his opinion and how he present his information on his show, which is a joy to watch. I’ve also come to find that this is only fair to those who have a more reliable primary news source. You still need the main stream reports to gain facts and more meaningful information. Jon Steward had actually covered about 6 stories during his show on May 10, 2011. Which were Teachers using the word homosexuality in the classroom, Obama’s 7 policy decision, Credit for the death of Osama Bin Laden, a coach promoting homosexuality, and the Mississippi flood. Each one having pictures, videos and audio supporting the topic. He only spent a minute and a half on the connecting story I found. Every other story he spent at least 3 – 5 minutes on. While covering the flood some videos were filmed in Memphis Tennessee near the levies others away. The way he placed the videos were to show how much the water kept rising. He used the reporters as measuring tools for the water and making a big joke out of. In all the videos he had the audio turned down so we could mostly here him and the jokes he cracked during the whole piece of clip. Which didn’t sit well with me, but it was the way he got the point across. I believe that’s what caught my attention and kept me intrigued. He can make a joke of any situation and have you view it a whole new way. Fox News covered the same story but they had more facts and details. I never knew a news station could do so many reports in different locations, different conditions and still have time to delivery the information. They took care in the struggles of the people and their emotions. The people’s main concern is hurricane seasons coming and with it heavy rains. There was even concern for the wildlife. An interview took place with a surviving family in Memphis Tennessee. The family had just recently move in the house that was destroyed by the flood. I learned so much I didn’t know from watching the story on Fox. A few things I learned was the levy they broke was located near Illinois. I was also illiterate to the fact that the Army Corp Engineers are station near the sand boils, monitoring the levels of emergency. They will be the first to know when there’s nothing else to be done. Last but not least they showed footage of the water polluted with rats, cotton mouth moccasins, and leeches. I believe that if more journalist follow Jon Steward’s honesty the world would corrupt into a great big ball of controversy. I love Jon steward honesty but what good is his honest without facts. Joking to prove a point is like covering your opinion with the stories foundation. A journalist must remember to state facts before opinion, some people may view a situation a little different from others. I’ve known people to be offended by the smallest gestures so in this profession you should really try to remember not to be so opinionated as often as others like Jon Steward might. I truly understand why his show is on comedy central instead of another station. He has great presentation just really needs to do more research with that recorder before a show. To be a good journalist without controversy remember to never be bias, never lack information, and always have excellent presentation. Rather you choose to report it live or just write a story, take pride in presenting it to the world. |
