Query Letter for the Appointed. Looking for feedback. Thank you. |
Dear Agent, I chose to submit to you because of your wonderful taste in the fantasy genre, and because (Interesting personal fact about agent) Iscal Stayton is a sixteen year old boy living in the small village of Entarna with his sister and mother. Iscal’s father, Teschuff, was once the leader of King Darien’s elite soldiers, but disappeared without explanation when Iscal was only four. Since that day, the villagers have viewed the Stayton family—kin to a coward and deserter—with pity or open contempt. Iscal yearns for his Calling Day ceremony, the day that he and the other young men and women of the village will receive their elemental affinities, and learn the professions to which they will apprentice. But when the ceremony arrives, Iscal is labeled as an “Unnamed,” the only Ranedalian ever to be found without an affinity. As they hurry from the village square to jeers of “demon,” and “cursed,” Iscal’s family is attacked by men he doesn’t recognize. Iscal’s mother is killed and he rushes his sister to safety. For two years, Iscal and his sister are watched over by Allister Benedict, village shopkeeper and family friend, but when the men come again Iscal is forced to abandon the only home he’s ever known. Struggling to stay one step ahead of his pursuers, he searches for the reason why men he’s never met want him dead, while also trying to master the power he was told he didn’t have—a power never before seen in the lands of Ranedal. THE APPOINTED is a fantasy novel. I have been published in Old Red Kimono. I have a B.A in English and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dalton College. I am also a staff writer for V3 magazine.
