          A week 'Till Freedom

May 1,1945

There are over 50 people in the same boxcar. My mother and I are so frightened. We are being sent to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Today is May 1, 1945. Mother, Father , Kate, (my little sister) and I have been in hiding for 5 years. Then,  Kate got sick and wouldn't stop crying. She cried so loud and so long that the Nazis heard us and captured us. After they  captured us, my baby sister died of her sickness. Now of our family of four it is now a family of two. Father died of a deadly disease while we were held prisoners waiting for the train to take us to the concentration camp.

All of us Jews were crammed into a box car.  We only had  one tiny window for light.  We had no bathroom, and it was so crowded we couldn't sit down because we were afraid of being stepped on an hurt.

Finally, the trained stopped. One child started to cry. Her name was Eva, she is only six years old. Her mother kept on trying to quiet her. It reminded me of when Kate didn’t get her way or she was frightened. So I went over to her and hugged her. I told her that everything will be all right. I had to lie because I knew that everything would not be alright. We were loaded out of the train, just as if we were a suitcase. Eva held on to my hand. Something about her reminded me of Kate.

We were taken into a small room with lots of chairs, there we got our hair shaved off. They shaved our heads to make sure we did not have lice.  They even made us take off all our clothes.  I was so frightened, I wanted to cry, but I didn't for Eva was still holding on to my hand and she wouldn't let go.

I realized I have been separated from my mother. I held onto Eva's hand even more tightly. From that room we were tooken to another room. This room looked like a dungeon from a fairy tale book.  In this room it was dark really dark and super scary.  I kept thinking a monster was going to jump out at me. Well, in a way, one did. The nazi slammed the door tightly. It was pitch black. I WAS SO SCARED!  Something felt different.  I was terrified to feel something spraying down on my body.  I could tell what it was when a woman said that it felt wet!  It was water!  I didn't know if it was mixed with something else, so I told Eva to hold her to hold breath, I held mine to.

From there they separated us into two groups and tattooed a number onto my arm that number was 39461. Eva's number was 39462. We were put in a small room. I told Eva to get the top bunk so the bunk bed would not fall on top of us. I figured she weighed less.

May 4, 1945

I am now 14 years old, today was my birthday, but it as been miserably, my bones are aching, every day I have to do hard labor, I have been separated from my mother, I barely get any food, and I am in a room with 150 other people. I share a bunk on the top with Eva and two other children. their names are Beth and Ruth, they’re twins they look so much alike that its almost scary

Every day more twins and children are being taken away to Dr. Josef Mengel.  He mainly gets twins to experiment on. Most of the time they don't come back. If they do come back they are deformed, and they only live for two or three days. I got whipped so badly that I blacked out one day for refusing to get in his car, but  Eva got into his car. When she came back she showed me a piece of candy and I told her not to eat it, and  never trust any body who trust Hitler.

      May 6, 1945.

Ruth and Beth are missing, I Hope they are okay.  I have been at this camp for six days and five nights. Dead bodies lay all over the smell is starting to get unbearable, it's awful.  I miss my family,  I hope my mom is still alive. Today I also found Eva’s mom laying on the ground, bloody, pale, and smelly. You could see he bullet holes, there are about twenty of them! I cry myself to sleep each night hoping that my mother doesn’t end up that way. Today Eva and I are on dungeon duty as we call it. What we do is after the gas is finished we help clear out all the dead bodies and put them in a pile  and then write down the numbers that are tattooed on their arm. It is a horrible job, but to make it less sad for Eva I pretended that  we're beautiful princesses trying to find our glass slipper. I am afraid for mother I still don't know where she is ! It has almost been a week a pure torture, but the good news is that I haven’t seen her body. The bad news I found Ruth and Beth, they were stitched together at the waist. when I saw it I made Eva walk the other way.

      May 7, 1945

We're free! The war ended today!  I found mother she looked beat and abused with dark circles under her eyes. It turns outthat she was one of the people who cut off the hair of Jews. I told mother about Eva and her mother. Mother told Eva that her mother mother went away and she was going to live with us at our house. I'm glad mother did not tell her that she had been murdered.

                          Epilogue

During this war, over six million people died  with more to be found this very day. This war was the longest war in history. Adolf Hitler is considered a monster by most people, but still today some people salute to the name hitler and still adore him.  Dr. Josef Mengel was real. He was considered as the angel of death.Today children that went to camp still have nightmares about him. It is true that he would take him in a ride in his car, and then give them a peice of candy and know that they would be in his office a week later for an autopsy.
