A poem I wrote inspired by Joseph Arthur's 'In The Sun'. Beautiful song.
We sat there in the near-sunset,
Where the oranges and purples of the sky mixed,
In the awkward silence of a lost connection,
Where words were but needed to be put into the right place.

We took brief but frequent glances at one another,
When our eyes met, there was life in them but discomfort betrayed,
For we both recognised that there could have but never had been a history,
Or even a future with the other.

Eventually, you break the silence with your questions,
About how and who I am,
I begin to answer them but I eventually tire of them,
So I decide to make myself the emotionally vulnerable one.

I ask of the what if's and would you's,
You respond but there seems a falseness in your eyes,
A wish to escape from my presence,
And so that summed up us in one.

Nothing.
