This is how I chose my WDC handle. |
When it comes to signing up on most websites, people usually tend to chose a user-name that in no way relates to their real name.In fact, we tend to choose one that reflects our vision of ourselves, or at least the vision we want the particular users of the site to see. In choosing my own "handle" for the WDC website, I wanted to associate my name with my own and still give an image bigger than myself. Something catchy (at least for me) and something that had meaning at the same time. So the thought process began. It wasn't long before I had gone through--and eliminated--all of my childhood nicknames. I mean I just didn't want to be known as Lucy Bell.I didn't want to be called Lee or Lu Lu or even Mama. So I kept digging. Then inspiration struck me. My mind, which bounces along on its own path and in its own time, came across one of the best times I had as a young adult. I was working at a catalog showroom--my first job--and I had fallen in with a group of wonderful friends. I was single at the time and my boss and I developed what you could call a flirting relationship. Okay, I can hear all of those sharp inhalations and gasps, but seriously, it was harmless and never fell under the realm of sexual harassment. Anyway, for some out-of-the-blue reason, I began to call him Bubba and he began to call me Annie. Not the Annie from the so named movie, but Annie as in Annie Oakley. All of the friends in our circle began to play the nickname game and so everyone knew me as Annie. I miss those times--and, yes, nostalgia plays a huge role in my writing--and so in honor of those days, those people, and those memories, I am officially known in the world of WDC as Annie.
