I woke to the sound of the dog's tail drumming
on the floor beside my bed, then felt his cold nose
pushing at my arm, urging me to get up that night.
I tried to ignore him, but his nervous tension rose.
I felt groggy, not in control, and began trembling
when I smelled the smoke seeping under the door.
Wide awake now, I quickly put on my bathrobe
and backed away from the heat coming off the floor.
I opened the window and my dog jumped for safety,
with me close behind, we ran away from the blaze.
I stared at the house, watching flames flickering,
the crimson glow making it a sad sight to amaze.
In the distance I heard the sound of the fire engine
racing our way, and the murmur of people close by.
Someone brought a blanket, wrapping it around me,
comforting me with words and I soon began to cry.
In the light of day, my home was reduced to ashes
and yet I was thankful that my dog saved our lives.
If ever there was a hero, it is my four-legged friend.
who woke me, and will always be a hero in my eyes.
