Once there was a girl with beautiful long brown hair who sang every morning and every night. Her people called her Little Lark. When Little Lark sang the wind danced and the ocean frolicked, the stars twinkled and the flowers opened. Little Lark met the day with a cheerful greeting and always had a lullaby for the night. So adored was she by her people that Little Lark was sheltered from the outside so that her song would always be sweet. But Little Lark knew there was an outside, knew there was more to sing about. She saw it when she would walk along the edge of where day met night, it was a different world from her own. A world whose people seemed lost and had faults but whose people she saw were also good and had dreams. Everyday Little Lark would eagerly peer down at the land of dreamers in wonder. Did these people sing with the birds? Did they dance in the rain? She sang to them and they sang back. They especially loved when Little Lark sang about the sun and moon. They sang of their own world and how it was covered in darkness. How it was a gentle darkness, a comforting one, but a darkness all the same. Little Lark wanted so desperately to share the light of the sun and the moon with these people who had dreams. Little Lark told her people of the dreamers who had no light but she soon saw that her people had become greedy. They believed the sun and the moon belonged to their world alone. But Little Lark was determined. The sun and the moon were kept in two different boxes. Little Lark travelled across the land for many days and many nights until she found both. So eager to share night and day with the land of dreamers, Little Lark tripped over a rock and dropped the sun and moon in her haste and tumbled over the edge of night and day. Down Little Lark fell in the sky with the wind swirling her long brown hair behind her. Down to the land of dreamers. Little Lark's people saw her fall. They saw how greed had corrupted them and begged the Great Father to forgive them and save Little Lark. For days Little Lark fell from the sky and all the while her people wept. Their tears quickly gathered and became the lakes and rivers and oceans of the world. Once more the people begged Great Father to save their beloved Little Lark so she could sing again and bring joy to this land of dreamers. Great Father saw the goodness in Little Lark and spared her life. Her body became one with the earth and her hair became the branches and trees that sway in the wind. And that is the story of how Little Lark became the earth of the new world and her hair, dancing in the wind, became the trees. The birds that nestle in her hair still sing her sweet tune and bring happiness to the land of dreamers. |
