Written of a friend's experience of losing a child, a son, in a tragic accident. |
When your heart is broken there are no words to help. When your heart is broken there are no thoughts left. When your heart is broken, time stands still, Not allowing your heart to heal or your mind to stop Thinking about the loss, the if-only thoughts that are held back Only by the whirring, the droning sounds of your heart breaking. You feel you can’t breathe, and your senses have gone numb. There must be a way to get the anvil off your heart, A way to open your lungs again. But maybe you don’t want to breathe. Maybe you don’t want to feel. Maybe you don’t want your heart to stop pounding in your chest. Because, if it did, you would have to feel all the pain, To hear all the voices Extending their sympathies, reaffirming the truth Of your loss. You can only hang on to the hope that one day You’ll be able to breathe again without hurting, To touch someone without reeling, To love without end the one you have lost. That day will come, a day when the memories make you smile. Hang on to that thought, hang on to that love, And remember your loved one, down deep in your heart. His memory lives through you and yours, always. Peace. |
